My father thinks (and I agree with him) that WP is waiting on the SLE decision until after march 1 to see whether or not Congress will resolve the budget mess, and that if the budget will be sequestered, it will be likely that SLE is cancelled.

So to any of the admins or posters with access to more information than the average joe, is this a valid assumption?

and if so, why is WP the only SA considering cutting their summer program this year?

If I remember correctly, someone already posted the letter from USMA higher-ups saying that. but yes, I think it's safe to say that is what they are waiting for.

Sequestration may cancel or cut back the size of SLE. But wouldn't you rather get the word that there is no SLE and that is why you weren't accepted than to be offered and then them have to say sorry, we were mistaken, we aren't holding it now. As far as the other SA, don't know how their funding is looking. Government financing is a tricky thing with different pots of money for different expenditures. The CSA (Chief of Staff of the Army) has said the focus for $$$ is to deployed and deploying units and considering that the Army is the main force deployed, that means less for everyone else to include West Point. Then it comes down to prioritizing. SLE is nice to do, but is not necessary compared to educating, training, and inspiring the Corps of Cadets. Perhaps the other SA have been told the money that they will use for their summer programs won't be touched or perhaps they rely on donated money like through from their graduates to fund the program. That is all speculation, but maybe they think that Sequestration won't happen either and they'll be able to go along with their programs. More will likely follow after we see what happens Friday when sequestration is set to kick in.
