Hello everyone!

I am a junior and a USMA class of 2026 hopeful. I submitted my candidate questionnaire on January 15th and specified that I am interested in SLE. From the looks of what I've been reading on the forums and on USMA's website, the candidate questionnaire is the only formal "paperwork" I am required to do until I am deemed competitive. So my question is, besides CFA, SATs and having good relationships with my teachers, is there anything I can/should be doing to continue the application process for SLE specifically? I also understand that if deemed competitive, the formal application will be available to me on the candidate portal; does anyone know when this will happen?

Thank you in advance!

Full application will be available to you in the summer. Sometime around June and July. Keep your grades up and identify your “why”. Why do you want to go to the military? Why do you want to go to a SA? Why do you want to be an officer? These questions should be answered from your deep core beliefs. It took me a few weeks to truly come to an answer. I recommend just brainstorming and peel away your layers to find what truly is driving you.

That will help with SLE and for your essay writing when your application opens up. Also go out and get more experience as a leader and learner. Experiences in leadership positions are key. Don’t just seek a leadership role just to check a box. Be in a leadership role to gain experience and memories. Learn from your position. Learn to lead and the consequences of your actions. These experiences / memories are what will help you in interviews or with your essay.

Good luck.

Thanks for the straightforward answer. That’s exactly what I was looking for.

And yes, I’ve been really “soul searching” to understand my why. My brother went through the application process and is now finding success at USNA, and he has greatly helped me with my soul searching as well.

Anyways, thank you again for your response. I really appreciate the additional advice you gave me.

A little advice from a 2025 applicant, a high class rank (top 5% ish) and a high SAT (depends on region, shoot for at least 1350) will be extremely helpful for you in the USMA and nom applications, as well as SLE.

I fall under both these categories, so that’s refreshing to hear. I’m shooting for a 1500 on the march SAT however.

A 1500 would put you in an amazing spot, however make sure to square away all other categories as well: CFA, Leadership Roles, School Involvement, etc. Other than that, your future seems very promising 💪
