Just wondering if anyone could tell me if Summer Seminar is different than the SLE or if they are basically the same for each academy. I've heard the NASS is more of an advertisement for the academy in general while SLE is a way for West Point to entice competitive candidates who are on the fence.

Son went to both SLE and NASS - and to the Marine Corps SLCDA (check this out if you have not). Highly recommend you do any and all that you can. You are making a huge decision and gathering as much information as possible will help you make an informed decision and have no regrets. Son initially had USMA as 2 to USNA. After SLE and SLCDA, he decided ground was better suited to him than sea and went to a 1a and 1b. Of course, with USNA going to Marine Corps is ground. But overall, USMA was better suited. Now a Yuk. During Plebe Parent Weekend in March of last year, I asked him eye-to-eye, (think Dad dead serious face) "are you doing okay." His response was "it's hard. but there's no place I'd rather be." Son is thriving. Get as much information and exposure as you can to make an informed decision.

I agree with @Bill P. DS went to Summer Seminar because he was USNA #1 for so long (Navy ROTC, Dad was Navy, live near Naval and MC bases). He loved NASS! USMA was a distant 2nd. However, when the LOE came from USMA with an offer of an overnight, he went. Came back from the West Point overnight and did a complete 180. He discovered the opportunities post-academy were much better suited to his goals and aspirations. He for sure wishes he went to SLE and USCGA AIM! I would wholeheartedly recommend pursue all you have any measure of interested in!

I attended both NASS and SLE this past summer, and I would tend to agree with your understanding of NASS as more of an "advertisement". Everything is planned out and there's not a lot of room for squad leaders to do what they want with you. In contrast, your SLE can differ a lot depending on squad leader/platoon. There's overall more free time for you to explore and play games with other candidates. It was definitely interesting to attend both because their organization was quite different (but both were a great week). Both also include what're called workshops so you'll be able to learn about subjects you're interested in. However, I found the workshops at SLE more interesting or on topic and I took more away from them. In the big picture I believe both serve to attract applicants, but they just do so in different ways. I would recommend attending both if possible because although there are similarities, there are also big differences and you get a feel for the place.
