Well today I got into serious trouble and I'm not going to explain it in detail but the person told me I would most likely get a felony.

I still haven't heard from the USAFA but will this affect my acceptance in anyway?

Yes.

Sorry to hear about your trouble. A felony is quite serious and would need to be reported to the Academy (they will find out). I would contact an attorney and find out if "the person" is correct. A lawyer will be able to discern what your options are. After you know the details, call your ALO immediately. In any case, I wish you the best.

Thanks and I'm still hoping for the best.

Its my first big mistake I made and well I know I won't be doing it again.

I just have to wait a few days before they process all the paperwork and determine what they are going to give me before I can safely say its a felony. I'm hoping is way less than that though.

So you are 18 years old... and are on the cusp of being charged with a felony.. and the comment is 'its my first big mistake' ? That implies that your expectation is that more mistakes are on the horizon? Do you really think that a career in the military as an officer... a career that demands honesty and integrity is what you should be pursuing?

A followup.. based on your post I was curious so I viewed your previous posts to see if my harsh response was unwarranted. Quite frankly I was shocked at some of the posts you authored... not knowing what the honour code is... uncomfortable silence in interviews ... a cavalier attitude to cheating... admitting to cheating on tests.... I will be very frank - I would expect much more from an OC who is expected to lead. I would recommend that you take a step back and reassess some of your priorities before applying to a service academy where the highest honour, integrity and an outstanding character is the minimum price of entry.

We'd have to hear the whole story before making assumptions about their's or anyone's character. And I'm sure the situation is more than just black and white. That's a good point though; it would be beneficial to think about the character required to be an officer.

And I don't think any of the posts you are referring to are any indicator of poor character. "Cheating on a test maybe once in middle school" isn't really significant.

And many civilians probably cannot recite the NAVAL ACADEMY honor code, so I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't know it.

I am sure that the OP would love to turn back time and not be involved in the situation. 18 year olds do make bad decisions on occassion. It will be up to the court system and USAFA to determine the impact this may have on this young person's application and life. You are correct in wanting cadets to be above reproach. However, we don't know ANY facts in this case other than there is a POSSIBILITY of a felony charge.

I agree that a cadet candidate should be of strong moral character. If you want an officer of character, you have to start with person of character. As a wise man once said, "you can't make chicken salad out of chicken poop." That being said, it is premature to judge this individual without even knowing the circumstances. Let's not be too harsh on an annonymous forum. Peace.

No matter how this situation is resolved - you must tell USAFA

USAFA will find out one way or another. No matter how this situation is resolved, you need to notify them and explain the circumstances. There are numerous questions that you will be asked on forms when you are inprocessing, you will also be subjected to a background check for a security clearance. It is certain that any incident that goes through the court system will be found, so if you are fortunate enough to have been offered an appointment, you need to talk to your ALO and/or USAFA Counselor and seek comment from them.

Good Luck.

It's obvious u will need to tell your ALO and the academy. However, the original post has too many question marks.
1. U don't know if its a felony or what yet.
2. If I'm not mistaken, u don't even have an appointment yet.

Wait and find out what you're dealing with first. then let your alo and the academy know if they need to know. Dont start something if u don't have any info yet.

Whether or not this affects your application to USAFA, a felony is a serious crime, that if convicted can follow you around as an adult for a long time. But you have not been convicted of anything yet -- as I read your post, you haven't even been charged yet. Even if charged, there may be things that can be done/negotiated to reduce that charge or charges. You don't identify the "person" who told you this would be a felony -- depends on where you live, but, in most places, the police make a charging recommendation to the District Attorney's office which actually determines what charges, if any, should be filed. You need a lawyer now --regardless of your future college plans and what impact a conviction might have on those plans -- a felony conviction can affect not only college plans, but work applications, your hireability, etc. even in the civilian world. You need your parents involved to help you, if possible, in finding a lawyer. Discuss these issues with your parents and your lawyer -- for now, your big issue is whether you are going to be charged with a felony crime and if yes, what are the potential penalties if convicted. As for USAFA --it's mid-March -- this kind of criminal case might drag on for a while -- decisions re notifications about charges, etc. will need to be made as soon as you, your lawyer and parents know if/what you are being charged with.

Ditto on dohdean's post. Unfortunately, now there exists the potential of you being flagged as a risk when under evaluation for any of things mentioned above. Hope this works out well for you and your future.

Yes. You are screwed. Not only because of what you've done, but that you're competing with many other people who never had to say "i may have committed a felony."

Ok... so what happened... you asked for opinions/help ... what happened?? don't keep us in suspense

Have you heard back yet?

It's not really our place to know, but my guess is it wasn't good seeing as his last activity here on the forums was 3 weeks ago.
