Does anyone know anything about the space science major, and opportunities after graduation?

I know that if you do the Space Science major and go through Army Space Cadre Basic Course you will receive the Space Badge upon graduation. That’s about it for me. There are a number of space billets and a Functional Area for space professionals.

Any space science grads here? I would actually like to know whether accepting the Assured Functional Area Transfer (AFAT) would immediately transfer you at 1lt(p)/4 years in, or is there a generous deadline to accept the transfer? And if there's opportunities to jump into a space billet from a MAJ or higher?

These are 300m targets, but it occurred to me that selection takes place at around the same time. It would be comforting to know if I could at least attempt it without sacrificing a potential opportunity later down the road.

Space science is a cool major, although it's kinda viewed as a second-tier major around here. If you're big on the space badge, go GIS then minor in Space. As for AFAT, don't worry about stuff so far down the line, it's going to change I promise.

On the note of tier majors, I’m curious about these unofficial opinions. What constitutes a top tier major? Are they all STEM?
