How important would you say special athletic recognition is for both the nomination and application? I have varsity letters but I've never received notable award from participating in a sport.

If you have them, great, you can get additional points in your weighting. However, if you don't fret about it, it is not a deal breaker. Many kids who are accepted do not have it.

I can be wrong, but the way I see it is The Academies just wants to know you’re in shape physically and mentally. They also like sport because of the skills it builds. I would say unless you are trying to be a recruited athlete you should be okay.

I would think that unless you are a recruited athlete that being voted a team captain would hold more importance than say an all conference award because it shows your ability to be a leader.

For the nomination it will vary by MOC. Each sets their own criteria, but in general academics and test scores will be far more important.

For the application, it all comes down to WCS points. WCS points are awarded for varsity letter and team captain. I don't recall if points are awarded for special athletic recognition, but if there is a check box on the application for it, it is likely that points are awarded.

Leadership roles are valued - team captains especially. Athletics are important but if not in sports look to student gov't or extracurricular clubs for leadership opportunities. SAs want leaders not joiners; no extra points just for participation.

In the Rand report, athletic honors such as All State etc maxed the athletic category - 800 points. It remains a mystery if the Rand report is still used.
