Hello All,

I have a 13 year old son and CAP cadet that wants to go to the USAFA or possibly the USMMA for engineering. We had a routine scoliosis check that came back fine. We had that checked because of family history. But when we had the doctor return with the xrays he advised us that my son had Spondylolisthesis level 2. My son has no pain and is an avid wrestler. The doctor (former Air Force) advised it would DQ him. Basically should I steer his dream away from going to USAFA or Kings Point? Is there any hope because if not we should just change gears and focus on a civilian career only? Thanks so much, Jeff

He will be medically DQd by DoDMERB.

Go to https;//dodmerb.tricare.osd.mil; Hit Questions about the Process on the home page; read paragraphs 11-12; 15-19; and 21.

The functionability and level/type of activity is one of the key factors in waiver consideration

OK sir so no chance for waiver here? Thanks for the quick response!

He didn’t say that. He said it would be a DQ by DoDMERB. The service academy would take into consideration the function-ability and activity in deciding on granting the waiver.

Thanks A1. Thanks Larry! So we might as well give it a shot because he is a champion youth wrestler and can do that with no pain. Just wanted to know if it has a chance through waivers. If there is any hope we are going to apply to USAFA and USMMA in 3 years. Take care!

You won’t know until you apply. It is a long grueling process my son was also medically D queued and we are currently waiting on the approval or denial of a waiver

Nervous mom. We are still 3 years away from applying. Just trying to understand the chances early. Pray you guys get the right answer soon!

There are some DQs that aren’t waiverable. There are some that are easily waivable. And everything in between. My son got a waiver.

Listen carefully to Deputy Chief Mullen. He is fantastic.

Good luck. He is young enough to develop his resume for SA and civilian schools - and with hard work he will do well.

Hello Mr Mullen,

I was told to ask your opinion for a USAFA waiver for this condition? My son has no pain and is a champion wrestler which is a very rigorous sport. I know you said he will be DQed but have you seen waivers at the USAFA or even Kings Point for this condition? Thanks for your time sir.

Jeff
