I am attending ROTC as a cadet. I plan to branch Signal and go reserve for 8 years. I want to get stationed at the Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base in Houston as a Signal Officer. Can someone tell me why this might not a good idea to preemptively pick out what base I want to go to? I am getting serious into my relationship and plan to marry soon. I would like to stay as close to my significant other - my significant other is a civilian.

Just to add, not to overstate the obvious but reserve units / members of the reserve do get called up for active duty at the needs of the service, so there is risk you may well end up stationed hear your significant other and yet deployed for a significant portion of your years of service to Fallujah, Italy, Saudi Arabia, etc. So factor that time into your future planning for love, marriage, children, etc. I am the son/ grandson of veterans, both of whom were deployed for extensive times in their marriage, and I am often impressed with how much the non-military spouse, communities, and families step-up to TCB at home while their spouse/ parent is deployed. People make it work. Of course, if you can't bear to be apart from your future betrothed, then you might want to reconsider whether serving is the right path for you. Good luck.

To second @Herman Snerd, during the OIF/OEF Years (1991 to present) Reservists probably served more overseas time than AD Units. Many of the "Regular Army" Units seemed to have served fewer deployments than Reserve Units, depending on the Unit and the needs. Especially if you end up in a Transportation, Medical, or Military Police Unit.
