Still Awaiting Further Instructions…

Hello,

More than two months ago, I accepted a four-year Army ROTC scholarship. However, I have received no further instructions and, when I contacted my school’s detachment about a month ago, learned that they had not even heard of me beforehand. They sent me the in-processing forms but I have not heard anything from the Army itself, other than this single ROTC detachment.

Additionally, I have not heard anything from DoDMERB since April. I know I will need a waiver, since an old injury disqualified me in January.

I am just wondering my experience up to this point is normal, and, whether or not it is, when I will begin to hear from some people. I hope this post makes sense, and thank you in advance for your insight and assistance.

The "had not even heard of me beforehand" part is strange. Were you in contact with the school prior to designating your scholarship there? On to the DoDMERB concern, contact them and see what is going on. I am a 3AD Army Scholarship winner and I was able to get DoDMERB done by late May, waivers and all. Seems a bit strange but not uncommon. Congrats btw on the 4 year scholarship!

Paging @MullenLE from DoDMERB, who may not have seen this and who will likely offer to get in touch privately to check status. He is the DoDMERB Deputy Director and kindly spends time on SAF.

The AROTC scholarship, and it says this detail if you read the contract you signed and offer, is a contingent scholarship on several factors including among other hoops successfully passing the DODMERB physical and eye exam. If you haven't yet received a medical waiver yet require one, I hope it's clear to you that there is risk and that you do not yet have this scholarship in-hand. If and once you pass the DODMERB gate, then fyi your scholarship is again contingently yours, and yet won't activate until you pass your PFT and first activities at the unit directly when you participate in your first day activities at school. Then once activated it only stays your scholarship if you continue to meet their academic, good behavior (or more specifically not bad behavior), discipline, military aptitude taught in military science classes, performance, and physical standards.

You are in limbo, and as noted nicely by others above need to confirm the status of your DODMERB waiver request. Until that clears, no it's not unusual for your unit to not have heard of you. You are "upstream" from being passed on to the unit as a cleared scholarship recipient. I also recommend lining up plans B-C-D in case a medical waiver does not come through- that plan can include joining ROTC as a college programmer if that might work for you.

By the way, refreshing to see such a nicely constructed and polite post - your writing speaks well for you and I hope it works out that you have the opportunity to serve. Good luck.

Was there anything on the national scholarship website that you missed? For AF ROTC, you had to go in and select you accept the scholarship and that got the ball rolling. Good luck!

Yes, I had been in contact with the school. Thanks for the advice!

Yes, and on the portal, it affirms that I have indeed accepted the scholarship. Thanks!
