Still on the island thread

Still here Saturday, and the mailman has come and gone. What's going on? Does it take some states longer to receive TWEs? Stunned DS is still on the island with so many amazing candidates turned down. Maybe our mail is slower?
Don't complain. You're in, until you're out.

I feel like a baby Gazelle roaming the savannas of Africa while watching the Lions and Hyenas gradually picking off lots of my siblings, one by one :(

This week's big dilemma has been having DD tell us her plan B while DW and I think it should be her plan C.

What are plans B and C?

Plan B (in her mind) is UVA, where she got in, but not into Engineering. We're in-state but it is still full pay. Plan B in our mind is Alabama in Engr with full tuition and partial room and board. Plan C is Cal Ply SLO in Engr with just $2k/yr. We told her if she wanted to go there she would either have to pay us back the difference between there and UVA (unless she became an RA for her last 3 years) in which case we would call it even.

SLO is in our neck of the woods. DS has some friends attending SLO--Engineer majors, they also have an AROTC unit there as well. Your DD has been blessed with quality plan A alternates. Being biased, I'd go SLO .

DS now confirmed to be still on the island. Rec'd wait list letter this AM.
So we wait while he firms up plan B, one of which is SLO.

Good luck to those still waiting.
To those speaking of a number of 1300 offers of appointment being sent for a projected class of 1165, how do they account for the 250 or so currently in NAPS/Foundation that have not received their offers of appointment yet as their final admission boards don't meet until the week of 4/13.

Yes the majority of appointments to fill a class of 915 are probably sent, so figure 1080 offers. This will then be back filled with the currently held spots for NAPS/Foundation where again based on history 20-40 will not make the cut, leaving that 20-40 to be pulled from the wait list. Then there will be another group come May 15th from the wait list to fill the spots of those who failed to accept by the deadline.

Bottom line is, if you haven't received a TWE 20-50 have the possibility to get a BFE before all is said and done.

DS wait list letter this AM said they have offered 1300 appointments and expect 1165 to accept.

The average yield of appointments over the last 5 years has been 85.8% with a peak of 86.9% in c/o 2016, trough of 85.0% in c/o 2014. Last 2 years were 85.7% and 85.2% for 2017 and 2018, respectively. So, the 1165 / 1300 would mean 89.6% yield. If class size of 1,165 is the driver that could mean another 40 to 70 additional offers to get to the target class size if yield on the 1,300 already offered tracks with historical!

Sending positive thoughts to all still waiting to hear news or waitlisted!

As you know SLO is a wonderful school, community, location, and extremely difficult to get into. Congratulations to your DS on his acceptance! If your DS wanted to cross over to the dark side ;-) they have an AROTC unit.

I just received a spot on the wait list. Everyone probably already knows this but the letter said they sent out about 1300 appointments (note about), to fill a class of 1165 (seemed like a pretty exact number) and that the wait list generally has between 70 and 120 people on it. Using last year's yield of 85.2%, rounding up, and assuming about 1300 to mean 1300 it can be roughly estimated that around 57 people will be taken off the wait list. With a wait list between 70 and 120 people that is very hopeful!

walterd, saw that too and somewhere saw that not everyone accepts their offers to be on the initial wait list of between 70 and 120. DS emailed them his acceptance already. The actual number that remain may be closer to 80.

That sounds good. Do you know if people who do not get appointments but are on the wait list are offered NAPS or Foundation?

Wait list means you are triple qualified. Naps/foundation is for those who are not. Two separate lists. Good luck!

I'm the poster who quoted the numbers from my BGO. My oldest is class of 2017 and had an LOA dated August 29 after his junior year. Same BGO is working with my class of 2019 wait-listed hopeful DS (who has accepted NROTC scholarship at Cornell)., I truly believe he knows of what he speaks and would not give us fslse. information. "1300 appointments have gone out and they expect 1165 to accept." I quoted him in order to answer questions that other posters were asking (that I know would also have been driving us nuts without some hint as to what was happening with admissions at this late date.)

Not saying that he would give out false information with malicious intent, just that he may not have the full story, or his source of information may not be totally "in the know".

As a side note; your BGO was correct, as my and several other posters wait list letters stated that 1300 offers HAVE BEEN made, and they expect 1165 to accept.

Walterd I can't speak for NAPS but I do know that many if not most Foundations students are 3Q'd. Competitive slates push some very competitive candidates into Foundations.
