Still Waiting for Waiver

My DS was recently DQ'd for eczema and rolling his ankle last year. He was treated for eczema once and it went away (several years ago) and he rolled his ankle in Football, sat out one game and then has played competitive sports ever since. He has gotten letters from our doctor and school athletic trainer confirming how these are not issues. He has emailed his RC asking them to request a waiver. He has emailed and called his FFR to ask if there is anything else he should be doing, with no responses.

I know we are late on this.....His WP account just says medically disqualified right now but it's still open. DODMERB says his account is under waiver review.

Is he still in this, or are they just slow in updating and closing his WP account.

He does have his backup plan in place and ready to go, but trying to plan a future where you aren't getting any answers at all has been extremely discouraging.

He can reach out to his Regional Admissions officer or tech.

We have done both, several times. Regional Admissions has not responded back and the FFR said he doesn't know anything.

His CFA was submitted back in January but still shows it's pending. The signs just don't look good.

We are just going to take this as a no and mentally move on.

Email his DoDMERB rep and stay super proactive with what they request for a waiver.

If his file isn't closed yet he's still in the running. I was DQ'd early in the process and didn't get waivers (needed three of them) till almost May.

Thanks for the reply and encouragement.

We have not actually gotten any confirmation that West Point is seeking a waiver for him. We've done some work ahead of time to collect doctor notes saying these are not issues, and submitted those to DoDMERB in case his RC does choose to seek a waiver.

I think our confusion is coming from no replies to our emails to the RC, and his CFA is still pending review even though everything is confirmed as on file since January.

Do you still think reaching out to DoDMERB could help?

Does West Point ever leave applications open even though they aren't seeking them as a cadet anymore?

Again, thanks for the response!!

I’m not sure if they leave them open. I’m pretty sure they would reject them. Yes, definitely reach out to DoDMERB, they will give you the details of his file and what’s going on. Also, if he chooses to re-apply having this info in will speed up the process immensely for the next cycle.

Under the circumstances, why doesn't DS reach out via telephone to his RC? It certainly seems odd that he is not getting any response on multiple occasions over a lengthy period. Reaching out to DoDMERB makes some sense. But, that won't get him an answer with respect to his CFA.

He has called his RC once and just got a not available message with no option to leave a voice mail. He is going to call again today. We already heard back from DoDMERB and they said they don't know anything outside of their portal, which we can see.

I started thinking maybe they determined he didn't qualify prior to his CFA being reviewed, but I would think they would let us know that?

DS is already starting to think about starting the process to reapply for next year, but we can't really do that with his account still open. We are simply at a loss and are hoping maybe someone else had a similar experience and could help direct us.

I do appreciate your suggestion to reach out by phone. He's using the email and number on his candidate portal under Contact Admissions. I'm assuming those are the best ones to use?

Ordinarily, USMA will notify a candidate who is not qualified. Your DS’s situation seems unusual at this date.

The numbers in his portal should work. But if not, he should reach out to the main admissions number in case something has resulted in his RC becoming unavailable. Definitely not a time to sit back and wait. Good luck.

Do not assume his status. I have no doubt that lack of response/communications is frustrating. He will get a final communication from West Point regarding whether or not he is offered appointment or rejected. If he has not received some official correspondence regarding his status then the outcome is not determined. He needs to remain persistent in reaching out to admissions as frustrating as that might be.

We did finally hear back. His CFA still says it's pending review, but they did put a waiver request status in his official correspondences that says he was medically disqualified and they are not seeking a waiver for him. I'm still confused why his CFA was never fully reviewed or why he wasn't denied prior to this, but I'm honestly thankful that we finally have answers.
