So if I go to VMI (I am still waiting on USMA) I will definitely attend the Summer Transition Program, but I have a question. How structured is the program? In other words, will we be allowed to hit the gym in our off time, or will we always have something to do or somewhere to go?

You will have plenty of free time to go work out on your own and to go up town to get something to eat etc... STP is definitely a worthwhile program that will help you get acclimated without being over the top (over the top will start in August:eek:) . It's a program that I wish had been around when I was about to start off as a Rat- I don't know anyone who is sorry that they attended.

Goodluck

My DS did STP last summer and said that it was definitely the right choice. It seemed that during the day their time was pretty structured, but he had plenty of free time otherwise. The only downside was that the weight room was closed on the weekends, which really bummed him out. We live close enough for him to come home on the weekends, so after the first weekend on campus, he came home for the other weekends. Apparently, a lot of kids go home on the weekends, and it's fairly deserted. But you will definitely not regret going and getting a class out of the way, not to mention getting to break in your low quarters!

Well, that isn't too comforting. I live in California, so it seems like I will be alone on the weekends. :frown:

no you won't- all of the guys in my sons room were from out of state- they were all on post. Almost half the corps are from somewhere other than VA- you won't be alone

Art.Perea, my DS will be attending STP as well and will be there weekends, we live 4 hours away, too far to drive his 30 year old pickup. :yllol:

When does the information come through on placement tests, etc. in regards to selecting you STP class? DS would like to take CALC.

zrxkuma: looks like I might be meeting your DS in the near future! :thumb:

I think we will be getting info on STP once we have finished all the paperwork and have committed to matriculate in August. But there is a contact info on the website if you want a definite answer.

I just broke out, and I'm telling you all the STP people were better off. They got some good PT, had less credits during the Ratline, broke in their boots, and met a lot of friends. Just remember STP might mislead you, it is nothing like the Ratline or life as a cadet.

After contacting VMI STP office, the application for STP is now online and you select your desired top 3 courses. They stated the department heads of the various majors are on spring break this week but next week will be available to ask which courses would be good to select for your major. If you select Calc, they will look at your transcripts to determine if they want you to take a placement test in order to to enroll in the class and let you know.

I would just like to add one thing about registering for an STP class. My son signed up for STP on the first day it was on the website and was given his first choice of classes. However, when time got close and letters were sent out with more details, he had been switched to another subject. But my husband called and they switched him back. So just know that that could happen, but just be proactive.

My DS is a fourth class cadet (2016) and took calc in STP, however, it seems those BRs who took the history course were the ones dancing for joy later. The history class proved to be a real bugger for many rats who took it during the ratline and the hostry final exam was scheduled as the FINAL exam time on the FINAL day before Christmas furlough, an added agony as the rats are anxious to get home. Food for thought -- many rats skipped taking the history course during STP believing it would be a breeze during the fall semester--not true! Proved to a be a thorn in the side of many rats. My son took calc in STP, and calc II during the ratline. He complained MORE about the history course than calc classes.
