My son is looking to apply for Army and Air Force ROTC scholarships. What is policy on strabismus? He had surgery at age 3 and vision correctable to 20/20. His eye still turns out. Should I get another surgery to correct or will he be disqualified? Curious about what can be waived. Thanks!

DD had strabismus surgery for intermittent exotropia of her right eye 3 years ago. She always had 20/20 and the surgery improved her depth perception. She had her DoDMERB exam and vision exam and had in the documentation that she had this surgery. Her sight and depth perception was tested as perfect and so far it’s not showing up as a DQ. And keep in mind, hers is intermittent so she can control the exotropia on demand. It only shows up when she’s extremely tired, but can control it when needed. She has a DQ for something else right now that we are working through so not sure if it might show up after we (hopefully!) have that waived. I’ll let you know. But so far, so good!

Absolutely the wrong place to ask that question. Too many "my kid had the same thing." Do not make a medical decision based on what you read on SAF. There are many variables and the history is incomplete. Is his present exotropia consecutive following esotropia surgery or a recurrence of congenital exotropia? Was he ever straight post op? Duane's Syndrome? Any vertical component? Measurable depth perception? Full range of motion? I could go on. I'm sure there are veteran SAF moderators who can tell you what your next step should be to get your question answered.
