As my kid inches towards Junior year - the classes have been chosen and getting other ducks in a row - I know it's important to have back up plans if she does not get into the USCGA and I'm trying to convince her that she'll need to apply to a few colleges as a back up. She's interested in Marine Engineering. Do we look at maritime colleges? Colleges with ROTC? I'm getting a ton of conflicting answers so I thought that I would just ask the experts here. :)

My DD applied EA, and was deferred to RD. USCGA is her first choice and only SA she applied to. Patiently waiting for a decision. However, we knew going into this there are no guarantees, and encouraged her to look at other schools, and be prepared for plan B (or C or D). We visited a number of colleges based on her interest (Marine Science/Biology). She was admitted to the 4 schools she applied to. We have visited 2 of them, with plans to visit the other 2 for Admitted Student days if she doesn't receive an appt. (both are April 3 & 4 -- after the anticipated April 1 Decision Day from USCGA). My advice, have conversations with them and ask "What if". Depending on their areas to improve, seek the best place for them to do that. Take challenging college courses (Math & Science), seek leadership experience, etc.

At polar ends of the spectrum in the civilian world:

Huge with unbelievable facilities
Has NROTC

Tiny, tuition free with unparalleled reputation
USNA and Webb were schools that I dreamt of for at least one DS.

My daughter researched CSPI. Her Plan B and C schools were ones where she would be eligible for CSPI. She is not a minority, but she spoke to a recruiter who said that didn't matter as long as she was at an eligible school.
