I was looking at the summer airmanship programs and was curious if taking the soaring program is required if you wanted to become a glider ip?

Also a doolie, and yes you need to take AM-251 (Soaring) then if they like you and you do good in interviews you can get picked up for IP.

Yes, taking Basic Soaring (AM-251) is a pre-requisite to apply for IP upgrade (AM-461). While most IP upgraders (~50-60) are selected from the three summer periods, a very select few (~7-10)are also picked up in an accelerated program after taking AM-251 in the Fall of their sophomore year.

+1 to this. Just to emphasize how few get picked up after the fall of 3deg year, only 6 people were picked up this year. If becoming an IP is a priority for you, definitely take it during the summer.
