Summer Seminar Decisions

DS was "not invited" to AF SS either, but he was not terribly surprised given they are only hosting two virtual sessions.

Remember the reference to 60% of those accepted to USAFA historically have not attended SS...there are lots of posts on this forum to support that figure. Chin up and focus on the elements you can control this summer to strengthen your application!

Keep in mind that because it's virtual, SS is only $20 to attend if accepted. $20 price tag is according to acceptance letter. The stated cost on the USAFA admissions website is $300 for any other year without Coronavirus, which is a tough pill to swallow. I'm grateful for the opportunity to go, but even more so at such a lower cost.

Don't sweat it man. I got rejected last year, and I felt horrible. Fast forward, I got appointed this year. I'm pretty sure the seminar is for outreach purposes anyway, good luck!

Please remember the following (taken directly from the USAFA Summer Seminar site):

Summer Seminar is NOT in any way a prerequisite for admission to the Academy. It is also NOT a prescreening or preselection program. All students applying for Summer Seminar are encouraged to apply for appointment to the Academy, regardless of selection for Summer Seminar. If you are not selected, it should not be interpreted as a reflection of your qualifications or ability to successfully pursue an appointment.

Don't sweat your non-invitation. When I went to Summer Seminar, I was in an element of ten students.

Out of those ten, only five were offered spots in officer training programs.

Out of those five, only three were offered appointments to an Academy.

Out of those three, only one went to USAFA.

That's right. We were a flight of ten students at the USAFASS, and only one of us made it into USAFA the following year... I'll bump that number up to two, come June, but that's because I reapplied.

This isn't to say that getting into USAFA is much harder than getting into Summer Seminar (in fact, stats might suggest it's easier?). It just means that being accepted to Summer Seminar is a pretty terrible indicator of your chances of getting into USAFA. Some elements had 8+ students end up at USAFA. Some elements only had one. USAFASS invitation and USAFA appointment are independent factors.

Don’t sweat it - our son applied to USNA, West Point and USAFA summer seminars and was declined at all three......but is now in his second year in Colorado Springs. The path ahead is not dictated by SS

Son was rejected from USAFA SS, attended USNA SS which almost won him over. He is USAFA '24 now.

SS is more about the academies selling you on them versus you selling them on you so don't read into it and think that its how they rank you for admission. They have demographic goals for recruiting where they may struggle to recruit from year to year so they make an extra effort to reach out to those folks.

SS was a great experience for my son so definitely go if you can, just don't get anxious when you don't get an invite.

Little late to respond, but thanks for all the kind words everyone. I am not really worried about the rejection, just a little surprised to be honest.

My son did not get accepted to USAFA summer seminar, but did go to USNA summer seminar and loved it! But then he was waitlisted at USNA and is now a doolie at USAFA.
My son didn't get into West Points, but did attend USNA's summer seminar. He was accepted to USAFA and is now a sophomore.
