Just heard back from the guidance counselor regarding DD’s class rank and I’m pretty surprised. (She’s ranked higher than I anticipated). Any idea how much consideration class rank is given in the application process?

My guess is that class rank is important but not the end all be all. My DD was accepted last year as an incoming Freshman and had a single digit class rank, but was also well rounded. I assume they look at the whole package to find kids that are well rounded and show a drive in STEM. I also assume that they are always looking to bring in kids from schools or areas that haven't had a ton of exposure to USNA. Hence, you rarely hear of kids getting accepted more than once...which selfishly is a shame bc she really wants to go again.

My son’s high school does not rank its students; it was NOT an issue for Summer Seminar or his USNA application. I would would presume for STEM program it is the same.

He loved Summer Seminar.

Good luck!

Thank you for the feedback. Her rank puts her in the top 3% of a very large class, but she doesn’t really have anything STEM-related on her “resume.” Whatever happens happens...just curious about all this stuff.

My DS was the Salutatorian in his High School class. His two (2) roommates at USNA were Valedictorians. My DS is obviously the slacker who didn't apply himself.

It is very common for candidates to be in the top 10% of their High School class. My guess is that it's so common, that it isn't even a factor anymore (if it ever was).
