Do you have to put Swab John Doe when you write a letter or can you just put John Doe? Confused and I sent a bunch of addresses to people that I just put first and last name without swab. Wondering if I need to change that.

You should put Swab John Doe on the address on the envelope. I think it would be delivered without it, but the cadre might possibly use that as a reason to call your swab out. Not necessarily, but they could.

Swab John Doe
US Coast Guard Academy
15 Mohegan Ave
xxxx Chase Hall
New London, CT 06320

Once they get their shoulder boards after swab summer they will be:
4/c John Doe

As usual, ProudMom7 has great advice. Your swab should get their mail, but best to follow instructions as best as you can. I would recommend a follow up with those people to address as "Swab John Doe".
I know for my daughter's year, some parents addressed letters to "Cadet John Doe" and I bet the Cadre had a field day with that, as they are not officially cadets yet. ;) LOL

Use the word “Swab” when mailing, and use it with pride. Some will think of them, and themselves, as “only” Swabs. But think of it the other way. No matter how hard they try, cadre, cadets, and active duty can NEVER be a Swab again. Only the current Swabs can do that.
