Is there anything for the parents after swab summer is over? I don’t see anything on the calendar specifically for it. Doing my vacation time for work and just want to make sure I take the days if I need them. Thank you.

No. There isn't. The swabs do not get time off at the end of swab summer.
There is a "shoulder-board" ceremony where the swabs officially get there shoulder boards and become 4/c cadets instead of swabs. However, this is usually done on a Monday on the parade field. If you are local, it may be worth going. But it is not worth traveling if you are farther away. Your child won't be able to talk with you before or after the ceremony and it is over quickly. If your child happens to be standing at the front or edge of their company then perhaps you could catch a picture. It is better to wait until Labor Day or Parents Weekend (currently the last weekend in September) to visit.

If you would really like to see your new 4/c cadet ASAP, I believe their first weekend following CAP week is a 3-day weekend if the week goes well. This is not always a guaranteed weekend, but a good bet.

The Mystic Flag ceremony is a time that you can see your cadet and spend a few hours off base with them. It's only a few hours, but we were able to make it work and it was so worth it! This is before the cadets started leaving for Eagle and before SWAB summer ends. For 2026 it was Saturday July 23, 2022.

Unless you are pretty local I would just plan on Parent's Weekend! I remember for the first two long weekends, my son actually had activities and things he was involved in and we wouldn't have been able to see him anyways.

The others are correct. There is no time off after swab summer finishes and nothing for the ceremony unless locals want to drive in to observe. Follow PDuddy on Facebook to capture that moment. And the Academy will also post some pictures up.

Do all swabs attend the mystic flag ceremony?
In general, yes. However, if a swab happens to be in isolation (sickness) then they would not attend. I think there could also be the rare case that a swab has gotten in a significant amount of trouble for something and they might be restricted from attending. But for the most part, yes. Even the cadets who have chits (meaning they are physically restricted in some way) still attend.

The 3/8 companies on eagle at the time do not. A-C are typically on Eagle
Usually the Mystic Flag ceremony takes place before the swabs start heading off on Eagle. I guess it might vary year to year, and the specific date for Mystic Flag is not often posted too far in advance. Last year, all companies attended, and A-C boarded Eagle the following day.

We flew in from FL for a couple hours at the Mystic Flag Ceremony. It was worth it and it gave our Swab an extra boost to carry them over the last couple weeks of Swab Summer. If you can I would, if not they have made new friends and they will be taken care of.

Speaking of being taken care of, if you do go to the Mystic flag ceremony bring water and a few snacks to share and be ready to let the plebes borrow your phone to call home. It'll be their first opportunity to call anyone but they won't have a device. Also, there's a period when they get a bit of liberty to get off campus. Usually that means ice cream and Target, so when you and your cadet are heading out be sure to look around and gather some loose cadets to go with you.

Last year, they did get their phones back for Mystic and Eagle.

Yes. After the Mystic Flag ceremony they got their phones for a few hours. They also got them on Eagle although reception is basically non-existent while sailing of course.

I’d say don’t stress if you can’t make it to the Mystic Flag ceremony. Being from farther away, we had to make a choice to go for the flag ceremony or go at Labor Day. I did get stressed because it seemed like a lot of parents were going to the flag ceremony. After the flag ceremony, I was able to FaceTime my child for a long time and catch up, and then when he was on Eagle we were able to FaceTime more. For Labor Day I got to spend the entire weekend with him instead of just a few hours at the flag ceremony. I think everyone is really different about when is the right time to visit but don’t stress if you can’t attend the flag ceremony!!

And as other parents have mentioned, most parents who are able to attend will happily invite a few extra swabs to join them for ice cream or lunch if they have space. And some swabs might just prefer to use their time talking with family on the phone and getting a few hours of freedom with friends. Your swab should not feel left out if you aren't able to be there. Usually the parents association and other parents groups for the different companies will set up areas offering snacks. And finally, usually the Mystic Flag Ceremony is streamed for those who cannot be there. The swabs always practice marching in and a quick run through of the ceremony. Many parents who arrive early initially think that is the real thing, but they will do the march in and ceremony again for real at the scheduled time.

There’s a shoulder board ceremony on the Monday after Sea Trials and swab summer are completed. While it’s probably possible to witness, it’s not really geared towards a “public” event. Parents weekend will be the first big event and I’d especially encourage any 4/c Parents to make that weekend if able.

I appreciate all this information so much! We are in Virginia so need to pick and choose some of our times to visit. My momma heart feels better knowing that others will be looking out for the "loose" cadets at the flag ceremony:)
We are planning on Labor Day and Parents Weekend, and I can't wait!!

For those that have gone through Day 1, what time should we expect to be finished with activities? I have heard around 3pm.

Also, any opinions on attending weekend events prior to Day 1? I understand this will be the only time to see the actual Chade Hall living quarters?
