My DS applied EA and is interested in trying to make the swim team if he is accepted. He is not a recruited athlete because this is only his second season as a swimmer. His times are improving fast but his record is small so far. What would be the best way for him to pursue this and get more information such as goal times ? Contact his AO or the coach? He's looked up times but can only find them for the top swimmers not the rest of the team online. Thanks.

Go to collegeswimming.com and search for USCGA. You will be able to see times from last year, overall records, etc.

USCGA has a respectable Division 3 team. Is your son a USA Swimming club team member, or just swims high school? If the goal is to compete at the D3 level, he will need to be a committed swimmer and will need to be training with a solid club team. The goal should be to be hitting at least AA times in his primary events. You can find the USA Swimming time standards by searching for "USA Swimming motivational time standards".

Definitely reach out to the coach; he is an excellent individual and is not interested in just turning out swimmers, but qualified cadets. DD was very impressed with him.

Good luck to your son!

He only started last fall, but he swims club and high school, so he's making progress fast for a newbie. Thanks for the ideas about time guidelines, we'll go recheck those. Glad to hear good experiences with the coach too, we appreciate your insights!

For an additional data point, the current team roster is posted. Look up each USCGA swimmer in the USA Swim database to gauge the range. I did this eval a few weeks back and want to say that there were a handful of AAA times, but AA and A were more common.

Thanks for that extra data. That makes him a little more optimistic. He's going to have to work hard coming to the sport so much later than most swimmers! He's right on the cusp.

What are his events/times?
Being so new to the sport, he hasn't settled in to exact events yet. He's got a 1:12 in the 100 breast and a :26 in the 50 Free and the 100 IM 1:06 I know. Definitely needs to improve, but he's just starting his second HS season, so I think he can. I think it's great he's motivated to try anyway.
