As per usual!!Sunny and a Humid 81 forcasted. Hydrate...
A core memory!Triple sweat-ex: heat/humidity, stress, fear. Jumpstarts that unmistakable plebe group smell of the white works infused with a potent brew every summer.
I arrived at USNA for duty in July lo these many years ago, and a group of plebes in whiteworks chopped down center p-way past me, trailing a toxic miasma behind them. I turned to the BattO who was my sponsor, asking him “What IS that smell?” He told me, noting they can’t smell themselves, they are so used to it. Plus, they are all using the same issue toiletries, so it’s all amplified. And whatever chemical is put into the whiteworks adds to the mix. Once PS starts, we often drive into the Yard and take our dogs for a walk in the evening breeze off the Severn, behind Wings 7 and 8, down to the sailing basin and that area. If you’re downwind of Bancroft, you can still get whiffs. DH usually smells it first and just laughs at that and the sounds of plebes sounding off wafting out of the building.
I’ll bet a pound of bacon the Navy grads on here know what I am talking about.
Make sure your DD understands "P" Company is pronounced as "Papa" Company. She should listen for the name not the letter. Her future classmates, if unfamiliar, would do well to learn the military phonetic pronunciation of their company too. I remember last year when the companies started forming up on Stribling Walk after that short period when plebes said goodbye to family and friends. A detailer, in a loud voice, was saying, "India Company fall in!" Then he started taking muster (off his phone!). He was missing a couple of plebes who might have been thinking I'm in "I" company. What's this India stuff!? I heard a mother behind me say, "Ohhhh, please go easy on whoever it is..." Here you go:Daughter got assigned to P Company, 29 Platoon.
Is this just for the Navy? Didn’t there used to be a famous Easy Company in the Army?Make sure your DD understands "P" Company is pronounced as "Papa" Company. My spelling is horrible. My favorite flag at sea was HOTEL closed up. It meant flight ops (helos) were under way. A couple others I remember; Oscar - man overboard, BravoZulu - well done. Alfa - Divers in the water. Bravo - Refueling/dangerous cargo. The flag I always looked for in port was the 3rd substitute (listed as Sub 3). I think you'll remember what that meant. The Commanding Officer of the ship was not onboard.Post the flags! Gotta spell in color.
Able, Baker, Charlie, Dog, Easy... was the WWII phonetic alphabet. It changed in the 1950's. All US services and NATO use Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo... today. Is this just for the Navy? Didn’t there used to be a famous Easy Company in the Army?
Yup. Was 28th last year (The Club). All those Plebes were shifted to 22nd. So, he'll be a Spartan now.22nd platoon for me. @IronmanDaremo Isn't your kid in that comcompany?
