My son is a Falcon Scholar this year and I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on a laptop/computer combo. If he is at USAFA next year, I know he will have to have the school issued computer. However, he will need something for this year. Should we go with a tablet for note taking? Or is there a way to purchase the same computer the cadets use at USAFA so he won’t have to purchase another one next year. In other words, is there anything we can get that will be useful for more than one year?

Which prep school is he attending? My DS is a Falcon Scholar and will be attending NWP. They ask them to bring a small laptop if they have one already. There are also desktops there for them to use. I am assuming each prep school has their own requirements.

He is attending MMI.

My DD loves her iPad and apple pencil for note taking in class. She really never saw a need for a laptop other than the issued one for school. But she loves the iPad. She did but the app GoodNotes.

Since all classes have an online component (usually homework), he should have a basic computer. We do have a site license for Microsoft Office, so you don't need to spend on that.

Don't go overboard. A basic laptop computer will work fine since everything is web based. Bare minimum it should have a web browser and be able to run either Office or Google Docs. If he's planning on taking it to class it should be as light as possible.

He will be issued a laptop when he enter BCT regardless of whether he already has a laptop at home or not. Now a lot of cadets (my DS included) wants a bigger monitor and also an iPad Air/Pro with Pencil for note taking so we got him those before school starts.
