Okay, need some help with this...DS was advised he'd be on a competitive slate. BUT I was checking something right now and it says "These are your nominations to date" and it has our Congressman's information with a Date RECEIVED of today.

Help! This means he has a nomination right?

Yes, he does have a nom, and congrats to DS on his improved Math score!

Congrats on the MOC nom. Can you comment on your DS interview date and portal update with nom ? Thanks.

Hi Tex, his interview was the 12th, and they called on the 14th advising about submitting for competitive nomination....then nomination showed up yesterday the 21st.

Congratulations! Watch your local newspapers. Some MOC's do a press release of their list of noms.

I have a similar question/situation with my DS. He had is Senatorial nomination interview this past Saturday then heard on Monday that he was part of the competitive slate. Today his portal shows he has a nomination. My confusion is does this mean that he was selected by USNA to receive the competitive nomination or something else?

Bennington1, that is my assumption for my DS...that he was selected by the academy....this is the most confusing part of the process.

A competitive slate means that your senator has chosen a slate of ten (or less) candidates, from which USNA will select one for an appointment. That's the "competition" part - you (or your DS/DD), is competing with the other 9 candidates. USNA will rank each candidate and give them a WCS (whole candidate score), and choose the one from that slate that best fits the needs of USNA. The other nine candidates that are not selected will then go into the national pool, where the WCS is used to rank and stack on a national level and USNA will select from the national pool the number needed to round out the class.

Thanks EOD/SEALmom. My question, though, will the nomination show up in a candidate's portal before or after the SA makes its selection of whom they believe to be the competitive choice, or do all slated competitive candidates see the nomination while the SA is making its decision on whom to offer the appointment?

I believe it is the latter. Congrats on the nom. DS is waiting to hear back from MOCs in the coming weeks.

It is definitely the latter one. Candidates who win the nomination will have their portal updated showing that they got it. From there, the academy will determine which one(s) get the appointment. As long as the candidates are fully qualified, one of the nominees will get an appointment. It is possible that more than one could get an appointment, though, as EOD/SEALmom mentioned above. Because the other 9 nominees who do not win the appointment that is charged to the MOC, will go into the national pool where they could still garner an appointment.

+1 USMAROTCfamily

Yes, your son has a nomination, and that is why it's showing on his portal. He is in the running for an appointment, but is not there just yet.

At LEAST one candidate from your senator's slate will be offered an appointment. The other nine on the slate, and IF they are found to be qualified by USNA, will go into the national pool.

However, just because a senator gave them nomination doesn't necessarily mean they are qualified to USNA's standards (medically, academically, etc).

The other nine candidates on the slate who are NOT charged to that particular senator will go into the national pool - and in theory, all nine could possibly be offered an appointment. Not likely of course, but that is why you see some MOC's list many candidates who are at USXA in their district.

Also, only candidates that have been given a nomination by their MOC will go into the national pool. Those who only have a presidential, ROTC or SDVET nomination do not go into the national pool.
