Take a year off?

Hi,
So I was just wondering, can cadets take a year off or even a semester off of the academy for reasons other than going on your mission trip (Mormons). I remember during basic talking to a lieutenant or captain and she had taken a year off but she wasn’t Mormon. She didn’t go into much detail about why exactly she took a year off, but she said she needed it and it seemed very casual and the academy let her do this. Has anyone heard about this or know under what circumstances would this be allowed?
Thanks!

Pregnancy is the only reason I have seen it happen. No matter the impression she gave you, taking a year off is certainly not a 'casual' thing at any academy.

A 4th class cadet asking about taking a whole year off of school....Have you even been in school a year yet?

As stated above, it would be very, very unusual for someone to take a year off for other than mission work, at least by choice...my roommate, class of '88, became class of '89 after some significant academic challenges...he did graduate in '89 though after 'a year away' where he worked his tail off to get his academics back up to standards. Very unusual, but not unheard of...probably not something you could count on or aspire to

I would recommend talking to your AOC. My squadron got an email a few weeks ago offering for 3rd and 4th class cadets to submit an application to take a year off. This is something USAFA is trying to start encouraging more. You can't just take the year to lounge around though. This specific opportunity is for cadets who want to take advantage of something not offered through the Academy such as an internship. I also know of cadets who took a year off because they weren't sure this was the right place for them. Getting to do this is more difficult, and I think it's typically only allowed for cadets the Academy really wants to keep. If you're ranked in the 900s and questioning your choice, USAFA would rather show you the door than accommodate your journey of self discovery. Again, you're going to find much better information internally than through this forum. Talk to your AOC, AMT, academic advisor, etc.
