Can anyone provide information/data points regarding TAMUs Corps of Cadets Scholarships for OOS Scholarship Cadets. My research indicates that the vast majority of TAMU students (95%) are TX residents. If a cadet has a 4-Year National Scholarship (AROTC) are there typically other scholarships that the cadets get to offset R&B/Fees? Thanks.

If the cadet receives at least $4000 in scholarships, then they receive in-state tuition at Texas A&M in the Corps of Cadets. So having a 4 year AROTC scholarship would be worth at least $4000.

@Kimber - thanks for the reply. I have read that as well regarding the $4000 and in-state tuition. My DS is out of state, so according to the website the OOS tuition and fees is $37,890 (vs $10,862 for in state). The AROTC Scholarship cover tuition and fees. So how does that work regarding the tuition? Does the recipient get the $37890 per year and can use the delta between the $37,890 and $10,862 to offset the R&B costs?

I have an email into their financial aid office for clarification, but thought I would check the board as well.

Room and board are separate. The Corp has lots and lots of scholarships. It is doubtful that a cadet would get enough from the Corp to cover room and board. There may be other scholarships one would qualify with through financial aid. Apply and check the box to apply for Corp scholarships. I understand that many cadets do not check it, so they lose out. Most cadets get some type of scholarship.

@jaglvr - thanks for your response. Assuming you receive at least $4k in TAMU scholarships - do you know how the 4 Year AROTC/NROTC scholarship for an OOS cadet would be handled based on the tuition waiver?

Thanks

When we visited they said that every cadet that applied for a scholarship got some kind of scholarship. If I remember correctly the minimum amount was $1500. It was my understanding that the ROTC scholarship counted as the $4000. When you get an answer from their financial aid office, let us know what you found out.

Will do. Probably be Tuesday as Monday is a holiday. We are headed there in a few weeks for our first visit. DS was all set for The Citadel until the acceptance to TAMU engineering came last week.

Similar experience. It was our impression that 90+ percent of the Corps received a scholarship b/n 1500-4500? (not sure on exact #'s) that could be used toward R and B expenses. Also, an ROTC scholarship would trigger in-state tuition, so the Corps scholarship would be on top of that. That contradicts jaglvr so I will clarify with admissions. DD was told that ROTC members also were required to be in the Corps.

@HawkeyeMom - Thanks for your reply. I also thought I heard that the ROTC Scholarship triggers in-state tuition. Assuming that is true, do you know how AROTC views the tuition owed? I'm assuming the scholarship amount paid (by AROTC) would be the in-state rate and not the out-of state (allow cadet to use the excess for R&B/uniforms)

I believe that ROTC scholarships can be tuition OR R&B, but not both. However, the Corps scholarships could be used towards R&B/uniforms/tuition. But, I'm checking with financial aid for clarification.

I am an Aggie, if you'd like to pm me, I can tell you some good things to do, etc. Y'all have to go to the Dixie Chicken, best burger in CS. We will be there Feb 8th for Aggieland Saturday. Campus is huge. There are buses that run inside the campus for free, just ask someone how to get around. Everyone is very helpful. Be sure to say "HOWDY" to everyone.

On Army ROTC was be officially moved around. I was told that they can do some "moving around to help out" My son will have Hazelwood benefits which are only to be used for tuition and fees. TAMU told us that there is a way to move $ of awarded Rotc in Nacy or Air Force.

My DS received ROTC scholarship to go to TAMU Corps, but now that he has been appointed to Coast Guard Academy, he is leaning towards that. Let us know what you find out about the scholarships. We are also out of state.

Looking into the answer for my DD it appears you do get an out of state fee waiver. This is based on Texas A&M's website: "http://scholarships.tamu.edu/Non-Resident-Tuition-Waiver" whicht states "The student must have competed with other students, including Texas residents, for the scholarship and the scholarship must be awarded by a Texas A&M University college or departmental scholarship committee or university representative." It would appear the ROTC scholarship would qualify for out of state fee waiver based on the assumption the ROTC detachment is a University department as mentioned on their website: "https://catalog.tamu.edu/undergraduate/military-sciences/#departmentstext" the departments would cover all three ROTC detachments through "Aerospace Studies" department, "Military Science" department, and "Naval Science" department.

It looks like the TAMU scholarship portal will be back up at noon CST today. The website currently says - The Financial Aid Portal is currently offline as we award incoming Freshmen. The portal is expected to be back online no later than Thursday, January 23 at 12:00pm CST. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Just an FYI for those that are awaiting Corps scholarships/awards.

Admissions counselor responded to my DD that she did NOT think ROTC qualified for in-state tuition, but referred us to financial aid for a definitive answer. We are still waiting back on that email. Will update when we hear anything. I must say, though, I like your rationale.👍 I hope they do qualify with an ROTC scholarship!
