I'm sorry if this is a repeated thread, but I'm very curious about USMA's policy on technology. What abouts cell phones, personal laptops, and other technology? I even hear of people having an X Box in their dorm??? How do the policies change as the cadet moves up in class? Thanks in advance!

Tech

Ha-ha you’re too funny. You will need to set your pay account and will need $2000 to fund it. You will have the option of purchasing a WP laptop, with and without a larger monitor, speakers and printer. You have to use this tech. You will be given your cell phone back after BCT is completed and if you have earned the privilege. I’m sure there are Xbox consoles, but they are for upper classman who have earned the privilege. During your first year, you will too busy and have not earned any “authos”.

My plebe friends have been playing their Xboxs and stuff...but mainly on the weekends. They hardly have enough time for fun, but a lot of the people I know who got academic boards didn't use their "free time" wisely. Grizzly, if you decide to bring a game console or hand held games don't it distract you and get yourself stuck in a sticky academic situation. Just some advice :thumb:

Actually, you can have your cell phone back after A-Day and it's not a matter of "earning" it back. Land lines have been removed and everyone uses a cell phone. You will have your laptop before A-Day so you will be able to email your family and arrange a meeting place after the A-Day parade.

I think being allowed to have your xBox was company dependent---I think I remember my cadet had plebe friends who had their xBox in their rooms after Christmas.

Yes, you will get your Laptop during reorgy week a few days before A-Day. Cell phones you'll receive during Reorgy week too when you report to your company (although I don't recommend using them for anything but informing your family about A-Day). Game consoles are technically not allowed as Plebes, but when you get in the groove of things, you'll figure out what you can afford to do and what you can't afford to do. I would advise against "time-wasting" items such as that. Besides, you can't use Xbox live here. Also if you have a Macbook or another personal laptop, don't bother bringing it, there is no WiFi you can use on post.
