Does the ROTC scholarship cover any part of the quartermaster account fees for The Citadel? I couldn't find anything directly addressing that concern on their website. Since some of it is uniforms, books and supplies, just wondering if anyone has any firsthand experience with offsetting that cost.

Short answer - not directly. The Treasurer’s Office handles questions re the QM Account. Its website states:
“The deposit is designed to cover the minimal costs associated with the cadet’s purchase of books, academic supplies, uniforms, accessories, haircuts, dry cleaning, and tailor shop charges. Use of these funds is restricted to items of necessity.”

The several services have different ROTC scholarship programs, so it’s important to read carefully and ask questions from officials who know the details. The Army ROTC scholarship for example, has typically provided an amount for books and also a monthly stipend while you are in school. They are not directly related to the estimate in the QM account, but you can use them to offset these costs, and a portion of your R&B if the latter is not covered by the college.

You need to ask the Treasurer’s Office how these amounts are paid or credited to you. If The Citadel is one of the schools you are listing on your ROTC scholarship application - call the college Treasurer’s Office and ask them this question and be specific to the service(s) you are applying to (Phone: (843) 953-5254). They handle over 500 ROTC cadets each year on ROTC scholarships, so they should be helpful as to how these scholarships reimburse you for books and mandatory fees.

Also, if you receive a national ROTC award before you enroll at The Citadel, the Alumni Association has been offering R&B scholarships through the Financial Aid Office - good while you maintain your scholarship. And, if you are competitive for national ROTC scholarships, you may also be competitive for academic merit scholarships. Merit scholarships have no military obligation and are awarded based on your credentials and your program of study. These awards can be used towards your total cost of attendance. But you have to ask…good luck
