The NROTC Preparatory Program (NPP) Scholarship

That’s what I was thinking GaitherDad. It’s too bad they have to commit to the program so fully. And early. At the expense of perusing a 4year scholarship. How does one know they aren’t competitive for a 4 year? Especially having JROTC experience, I would think that would add to the odds of a 4 year scholarship. And how would applying to USNA factor in? Does that trump this program, similar to how an appointment is handled with NROTC?

I would certainly think NJROTC experience would help in college NROTC. For example, being on a Nationally competitive armed drill team for three or four years in high school would mean you could walk on and probably out compete some of the college kids out of the box. That being said, the most important things in getting a four-year scholarship are SATs and grades. I think the NJROTC experience will help a mid more once they are IN college than it will help them in winning a 4 year scholarship. On the other hand,NPP is geared toward Navy Junior ROTC. In fact, looking at the applications it looks to me that it is only open to NJROTC cadets

I applied to both USNA and 4 year Nat Scholarship. Once I received my rejection from both, my JROTC instructor informed me of the NPP Scholarship at Maritime College. I applied that same week before the deadline like 5 days later and now ill be attending Maritime with that scholarship and leaving to NSI on Monday. Idk if thats normal but I when I applied to NPP, I informed the school that I had USNA and NROTC apps open and awaiting decision. When I got accepted for NPP, I had been rejected by both but I started the app with decisions pending for both and it caused no issues.

That’s awesome and makes sense!! Congrats!!

Does anyone know how this will affect future ASR (scholarships reserved for NJROTC) quotas?

Glad to see NJROTC is being recognized for what it is.

Reading through the instruction that ProudDad17 posted above and comparing it with the links for various participating universities that are available on the NROTC scholarship page, the Navy doesn't seem to restrict this to students from Navy JROTC programs but the individual colleges might have that requirement for the one year scholarship they are giving for the prep year.

UMBC specifies that it is for JROTC students (and also seems to take financial need into account). University of Memphis requires a recommendation from either the SNSI or a Math or English teacher.

Because the university controls the prep year scholarship, they would be the entity that could modify those requirements. The respective Naval Science departments would be a likely first step to inquiring if a specific school would consider a student with no JROTC background but a similar leadership and community service profile.

Has anyone heard of this scholarship? I understand it is relatively new, and that it works similar to NAPS. Certain participating schools offer a one year prep. scholarship and if the prep. year is successfully completed, a 4 year NROTC scholarship is automatically awarded. Schools that are presently participating on listed on the USN ROTC web page and include Notre Dame, Norwich, University of Arizona and others.
This is a new program. I am an NJROTC Instructor and this new program is a means to meet the Navy's future need for Officers. Information can be found on the NROTC web site. The first step is participation in an NJROTC Program and being recommended by the Senior Naval Science Instructor. The powers to be are working very hard to grow the program through more Universities. We have been told to anticipate up to 200 scholarships for school year 2020/21.

NSTC INSTRUCTION 1533.14

Not only is the NPP new, schools that are participating provide a FULL RIDE scholarship for the first year. A lot of work is going into this program and working towards room and board for the remaining 4 years... more to follow. Expect RAPID growth for SY 2020/21.

It sounds like this program would be perfect for an outstanding NJROTC cadet who has a slight weakness in one area, say for example, math. It would give them an extra year to bone up and be prepared for the new STEM intensive Navy

There will be no more ASR scholarships. NPP has replaced it.

What is your source for that info.? NSTC INSTRUCTION 1533.14 does not say anything about the NPP replacing ASR. They are slightly different programs and it does seem that they would be redundant or inconsistent.

So, I wrote to the Navy ROTC office to ask the question of whether a student can apply for both the National 4 Yr. NROTC Scholarship and the NROTC Prep. Program. The answer is that one can apply for both. And it looks like the first scholarship awarded will cancel the application for the other. The reason I asked, is that my DS may end up with marginal SAT scores and, if so, the Prep. option looks like a great backup plan. This is the answer I got from the NROTC office.

"Mr ___________,

They are separate applications and you can apply to both but if selected for the Preparatory Program (prior to being selected for the NROTC program) you will no longer be consider for the NROTC scholarship.

Sincerely,

Tom Glazer
