"The Wait List" Club.....

All's Quiet in New London????

Any information would be appreciated. Trying to move forward with Plan B while hoping for Plan A to become a reality is really challenging. Especially when Plan A is so important to DS. I keep reminding him that this uncertainty is a real world scenario, but I think that we would all like closure soon. This waiting process seems like a slow uncertain death, especially with no posts of anyone receiving a phone call.

DD seems to think there won't be any calls until tomorrow. Not sure where she gets this, but it is keeping her mind at peace.

Now I can't speak for our son...he's been real quiet lately and every so often he mentions his plans but that waiting for "THE" answer is making him nuts!!

As for me? Monday was good...nice and relaxed...tuesday felt like last monday and I lost a few days feeling like this is going to be a never ending week...Today...not soooo bad but by friday I can assure you I will be posting that lil' guy beating his head against the wall....it's not how I truly feel...I just like the icon! HA! The silence is almost deafning...creepy...BUT that's why we have these forums...TO VENT! This period of time reminds me of when I was waiting for my board results...it ranks right up there!

Disey and All,

Keep the faith, work the back-up plan, and get outside in nature for a walk. When we were waiting, getting outside really helped me put it all in perspective. Some days I would walk and be crying along the way, and other days I would have perfect peace. Either way, getting out of the house by myself and my thoughts (no ipod) was key and helped alot. I know this is really, really hard, but you all have amazing kids that are going to be great no matter what happens. All of you parents (and kids) out there have done a great job, it's not everyone who makes it this far in the game.

Wishing you all the best outcome for all your children. Hang Tight Gang! -officer

Quiet in Wait List Land

It seems too quiet in wait list land. I am checking my phone every hour or so. I talked to my AAP and they don't even have an update on their site. Does anyone know if no call comes is there a last minute club for possible no shows or last minute cancellations wondering if I should get shots or what else I can do? Hoping and dreaming for the phone to ring.....

Yes! The silence is deafening. DD wrote to the soccer coach to let her know she still has the academy is where she longs to be ,but has plan b moving. She has always responded quickly, if for no othere reason than to give her an encouraging word, but this time nothing. DH and I feel that says it all, but are keeping just a sliver of hope. I forward the phone to my cell when I leave the house and pray a lot.

Although May 1 was the "deadline" for those who had appointments before May 1, a candidate who has received a "late appointment" is given 2 weeks to accept/decline (although they push for a decision much sooner).

Late appointment "declines" could produce 2 outcomes:
  1. Begin with a smaller class than the anticipated 290 swabs.
  2. Continue to groom & fill the class as needed to reach 290, based on accept/decline notifications, up to the last possible moment.

In reality, for some candidates it could come as late as June 1.

As long as you have not been notified that you are OUT, you are still IN.

Other Academies

I know my son's friend just got offered an Appointment to USAFA last night, so it is happening with all the academies. :)

Historically speaking, doesn't USCGA always goes to the wait list to fill the class?

"Semper Paratus"

My son is ready to go both mentally and physically, it is just a matter of the actual time it takes to fill out the paper work, and reading some of the other forums get shots. Dental has been done, passport in hand, we have checked hotels in the area and even though New London looks full it looks like their is room in the area with just a short drive to the Academy. We would need just less than a weeks notice to get there. The biggest thing I would hate to see is the Academy take less than the 290 because they feel they can't give someone enough notice. I know some of the rest of you probably feel the same way.

ynot12...keep your faith my friend....the silence IS awful but I remember last year going through the wait until the dreaded TWE came to our home declining our son...this time around we seem to REALLY think if it's meant to be it will be! The wait list is a HUGE honor for our young ones! They have to make decisions for plan B, wait in limbo for a deadline of June 1 to roll around...kinda sounds a bit like life huh? :shake:

As parents we made it to May 15th...remember May1st? Uuugh! We can do this...couple of weeks and fate will take them for a wonderful ride...no matter what the path...C'Mon USCGA!!

As far as what things are like around here...
:bang: Me

:screwy: Hubby looking at me

:bounce: our young man at home
Good thing we have a wicked sense of humor!!

Yes...since establishing the Alternate Pool/Wait List about twenty years ago, we have always tendered some appointments from this group of applicants; however, as of this afternoon, no appointments have been offered to the Class of 2014 from the wait list. We're currently forecasting 292 accepts, but there are several scenarios which could occur between now and June 1st to create vacancies in the class. The wait list will be reduced to ~20 applicants on Monday/Tuesday and those individuals will be notified/asked via email if they are still interested in accepting a late appointment. All other applicants on the wait list will receive a non-acceptance letter in the mail.

As Luigi, Boss, and others have said, this has been an extremely competitive year with an unusually high yield...if our current forecast holds true, we will have offered only 376 appointments for 292 accepts (78% yield) compared to the following for the last four classes:

2013: 411 / 290 (71%)
2012: 411 / 294 (72%)
2011: 391 / 272 (70%)
2010: 394 / 277 (70%)

disey3,

YOU CRACK ME UP!!!!!

Love your use of the smiley faces.

I am hoping and praying you hear good news. We know of one CGA appointment that was declined, so hoping you and others are appointed soon!

Objee, thanks for the update....

It's always better to know the facts in order to understand the situation. I know it won't be easy paring down the wait list  , but it makes sense at this point. Here's hoping all, some, or a few on this forum are part of the last bunch of "waiters". Keep the faith, enjoy your weekends....

Hopefully tonight we will see a few wait listers continue waiting...:thumb:

Sounds like if USCGA goes to wait list it will be for single digits not the 40 from a few years ago. Stay positive but get plan B ready.

Thanks for advice...Plan B has already been in motion and he's registered for summer classes to get ahead of the game for fall 2010...I guess it's just getting to be that time & we're all (on this forum) keeping faith & staying positive...as best we can...

Disey3 and others keeping this thread warm - I'm hoping that someone on the board will post that they received an email and that they're still in the game. From what I've read from the prospective cadets and the parents on this board, USCGA acknowledged through the wait list some exceptional young people. If the stars don't align for these young adults to bring them to the CGA, then their Plan B schools will truly be the benefactors. We're keeping the faith until the final notice is given. :thumb:
