THE week has arrived....

Can someone explain about Prep School admission. Is it a different application process or it's part of the Academy application?
It depends on the prep school that you get assigned to. I know there isn't one for NAPS but I do recall hearing that other preps do have an additional application. I think it is more about getting information than anything. You will "get into" whatever prep the coast guard sends you to if that is the worry.

Just checked my portal and saw that I was waitlisted for USCGA. I sent an email stay on the waitlist. Does anyone know how many people will be on the waitlist or if anyone gets taken off the waitlist? Thanks

Yes about this, if the waitlist is not ranked how will they go about pulling people off the waitlist?
*From what I understand*, pulling people off the waitlist is similar to the way they make their admissions decision. They are trying to create a balanced or holistic class. On the waitlist letter there usually is a rough estimate as to the date where they will know if they will be pulling anyone from off...but it definitely is an estimate. They won't know how many, if any, will be pulled off, it depends on how many spots they have available to offer after the deadline to accept or decline the offer. For us we never knew the amount of people on the waitlist, but someone did start a thread on here (which you all may want to do, it was helpful to feel the solidarity with others!).
We didn't hear anything from the Academy until late May when they sent out an email stating that there were going to be some open spots available and we had another opportunity to confirm we were still interested. They also gave us a clear date and let us know that we would know either way by that point.

No. Not a separate application. During the review process, the board makes recommendations on who they believe are very qualified candidates but perhaps needing a bit more prep in a particular area. Perhaps everything is great except they feel that a prep year in STEM classes would help solidify their academics to do better at CGA. Sometimes it is offered to those who were enlisted who apply to get them back into the academic mindset. Sometimes it is offered to an applicant whose school may not have offered AP or IB classes....their application might look amazing but they simply didn't have the opportunity to take those highest level courses. Sometimes it is offered to recruited athletes who may benefit from an extra year of prep.

Prep school is considered the golden ticket into the following year's class. Yes, it is an extra year of school, but as long as you complete the year in good standings, you WILL be offered a spot in the next year's class if you reapply. Prepsters are well-respected at CGA and are often looked to as leaders among the next year's class, especially during swab summer, because they have a year of experience under their belt.

Which prep school you are sent to is usually based on your sport and your projected major.

Class of 2026 did see this people taken from the waitlist! (It varies year to year) My DD was one of them. May 27 was when she found out! It was a whirlwind summer but she’s a happy 4c and all of us are tickled it worked out that way. Here’s my been there advice… go ahead and do immunizations needed , passport update(if needed) have all your documents you might need if accepted… stay in shape, (you don’t want to report out of weight standards or out of shape) stay well, be safe and get stoked about your plan B (if uscga is your top choice I hope you’re planning to reapply if not pulled ) if you get the call you will have all the necessities taken care of and just have to emotionally prepare for day 1!!! Best of luck to you!

Hi all...Son finally was advised today/last night he is on the waitlist for CGAS program. What does that even mean for prospects? Of course he has already said yes he wants to be on the waitlist. Honestly we as parents could not have been more unprepared for this whole process and frankly my DS has been handling this process mostly on his own with support from his JROTC Cadre...only because we have no military background and weren't that helpful. Of course we are supportive. Any input so much appreciated.

He is on the waitlist for the Prep School program. This is a separate list from the waitlist for CGA. The Academy always offers more appointments to both the CGAS program and to CGA then they have spots for. They know (based on numbers in past years) approximately what percentage of offers will be accepted. If more than expected decline or if more than expected do not receive the waivers they need, then they start pulling from the waitlist.

CGA does not have a numbered waitlist. Instead they are looking to make a well-rounded class based on who has already accepted and who is on the waitlist. All your son can do is wait. People can be pulled from the waitlist right up until reporting day. As another parent suggested, if this is his number 1 choice, then go ahead and make sure he has a current passport, make sure all immunizations are up to date, make sure he stays fit and ready to report if he is given a chance.

As for CGAS itself, it is a golden ticket into the class of 2028. If he makes it in, then as long as he finishes the year in good standing, he is guaranteed acceptance to the following year's class if he reapplies. It gives him an extra year of experience and a good foundation.
Good luck to him.

Thank you so much. It is so beyond compare his #1 choice and we will do all the things suggested to support his potential path forward. I appreciate the insight.

And he should also continue to prepare for his Plan B, whatever that is. If he doesn't get off the waitlist and he plans to reapply next year, then he should take classes that mimic the courses that 4/c cadets would take at CGA. He could even apply to self-prep at one of the CGAS schools.

He has mentioned reapplying if he needs to. I didn't know if that was a real option but probably he is better informed than I am. So that is great advice thanks! And yes I am trying to get him to focus on Plan B - he has good options IMHO but none can compare to USCGA!

Thank you for your advice. My DS got waitlisted and reading through the forum, it seems like people also have an offer to the Prep program. So the chance to get in the Academy is much higher than those who got waitlisted .. (seem to me).

CGAS (prep) is just one of the offers so to speak, no one has an a full appointment and an offer to prep school. Prep school is used to strengthen the candidate in some way, some kids need an extra year to get them where they need to be math and science wise before heading to the academy, some are excellent candidates but need a higher PFE score. Prep is specifically for improvement, also though its the academy investing in you so if you do what you need to your chances to matriculate the next class is high. Waitlisted kids are kids the academy deems candidates for full admission, as a selective institution there are always more applicants than spots so thats where the waitlist comes in. As I understand it if you are waitlisted and don't get pulled from the waitlist you are able to reapply the next year EA which non-waitlisted re applicants can not do (double check this with your AO). Also, if you read the forums you will hear of people self prepping which means people go to the same institutions that the academy sends CGAS to, but on their own dime (or scholarships). This gives them access to the same curriculum the prep kids get, and an opportunity to improve their application to reapply. This was our daughters Plan B, and she would've been able to self-prep on full scholarship. Like I've mentioned before our DD was called from the waitlist late May last year. In meeting her shipmates I actually know more quite a few that were re-applicants either because of being waitlisted and not coming off the waitlist, or being denied for a waiver and encouraged to apply the next year in hopes a waiver spot would open. There are so many variables, bottom line if it's a no for now but your kid is still really feeling called to be at USCGA they should try again!

Hello, I have a question regarding the waitlist system. Hopefully someone could help me out.

I found out on March 31st that I was waitlisted for the CGAS program, however I received a full appointment to USMMA two weeks ago. I know that USCGA is my first choice and that the waitlist decisions won't come out until some time during May. My USMMA portal states that I must accept or decline my appointment by May 1st or else my appointment will be rescinded.

If I were to accept my USMMA appointment, but then later hear back from USCGA that I'm being pulled from the CGAS program waitlist, would I be able to back out of USMMA and attend CGAS being that I already accepted the USMMA appointment?

Thank you for the help.

I do not have the answer to your question but I can tell you that all CGAS appointments have to email LT Rick Scott and let them know by April 15th if they are interested or not so most CGAS wait listers would be pulled at that point in time. Any others would be if someone changed their mind or didn't get through the medical.
