Thin White Envelope

At a local WP candidate informational meeting 2 weeks ago, there was a senior who was being recruited as an athlete. Our state Senators had already closed their apps as had the local MOC's in that city. The mom and dad were clearly not familiar with the process and were baffled by the nomination requirement. I felt so badly for them, the presentation was very succinct and covered the basics but man, coming in this late and not having any background info I could see their heads spinning.
The admissions rep just reassured them that they had until January 31 for the application. I cannot imagine starting the process this late. I would only be able to speculate that if the candidate were that amazing that WP would find a nomination.
And the rep was very clear that those in the room needed to complete their applications as best they could as soon as they could. 2 of the 8 in the room had been DODMERB qualified, the others hadn't triggered their DODMERB yet.
Made me feel much better that our DS was done and in the holding pattern.

im fairly certain that if they have recruited this athlete then they have a Nom waiting for them that is outside the MOC process. that might be why the family was unaware of it.

Or, he is being recruited for USMAPS, which does not require a nom.
You can't actually be recruited for USMAPS. You have to apply to and be recruited by the academy, where some form of a nomination is required i.e. MOC, service-connected, etc. If my memory serves me, recruited athletes normally don't need a MOC nom, but they are encouraged, as all are, to get as many noms as they can in all categories that they are eligible just in case for some reason they are dropped as a recruit for whatever reason. The prep school is intended for athletes, enlisted personnel, and cadet candidates with a minor weakness in one area to gain strength in that area before getting to the Academy. Those candidates had to apply to USMA, get rejected from the academy, and be offered the prep school.

@FCH76 You are awesome. I have learned so much from you. Thank you. Have a great evening.

This letter is because she has not updated her portal in awhile. DS received the same letter this weekend. Yet he received a call from WP person telling him that WP is the place for him. I find this odd since applications aren't due until Jan 2020. Is WP getting so many applicants it can turn away extremely qualified ones? I would call RC and they will reopen her application.

Yes, they turn away fully and highly qualified candidates every year.

Of course! We are all here to share knowledge. My older son did a year of prep before he went to the Academy. I learned a lot during his application process. Best thing he could have ever done. He really grew up in that year. I would prefer that my younger son go to the prep school also rather than go straight in. It's such a great experience and really helps to prepare them for going "down the hill."

Also in holding pattern and had a similar experience...one of DS's brainiac friends showed up at school on on 11/11 and told DS he spent 17 hours on USAFA application over the weekend. BUT...the friend had no concept of NOM process and Colorado's MOCs' windows closed in October. Ouch.

I could swear I read on this forum about the opposite happening to a kid from California. He had heard he needed a nomination, so he applied for those. Got a coveted Cali nomination in Feb and had missed the USMA application deadline. I don't know how that can happen, but apparently it was true.
