Thoughts and best wishes from an applicant still waiting

Like many of you out there, I'm still waiting to hear from USNA as well, and I just wanted to share some of my thoughts and information with you.

First, in my opinion a lot of people believe they know exactly how admissions works, but from what I've seen this year, nobody but the people in the admissions office know exactly what they are doing. Thus far, I've gotten a lot of different information. My regional director originally told me I'd hear end of February beginning of March because my state and district was to be reviewed end of February. I hadn't heard anything on March 14th, until my regional director told me that our state review has been pushed back on the list and he apologized for the delay. We realized it could have been pushed back for multiple reasons, but thought it was probably because not everyone in my district had their application complete by the end of February (it is thought that admissions can't review a district unless every application is in), and we then realized we knew an applicant who never finished their application (and never told the academy). I also called the two MOC's offices who nominated me, and they said our state simply hasn't been reviewed. The only appointment I know of from my district is someone who did the foundation program this year and had an LOA. (My state only has two districts).

Also, I know people say each MOC only has one spot and the rest of the 3 Qed candidates go to the national pool, but don't worry so much about this. I was sitting in my MOC's office back in November before my interview, and the receptionist and nomination coordinator were talking, and they said that last year 9 nominees from this one MOC all got appointments to the same service academy. So if you've heard of others from the same MOC slate have recieved an appointment, and you haven't gotten a TWE, you are definitely still in the hunt.

For those of you who say you're starting to get worried, this isn't helping anything. I know it's hard not to be worried, but especially if it's your DS/DD applying, don't keep saying you're worried. Can you imagine what it feels like for them if their parents are losing hope? I can say personally, I want this more than anything and it's all I can think about, and it's pretty much all my family talks about, but I haven't been worried. I haven't been worried because I know that there is nothing more I can do, there is still plenty of time before April, my state (like many of yours I'm sure) hasn't been reviewed, and I know if it doesn't work out I'll apply again next year, and again until I get in. I've noticed that not many appointments have shown up on this thread yet from March. Nobody really knows when everyone will hear (they say before April 15th, and today a coach I'm speaking with at the academy said the last letter will be mailed April 1st) but because of this, it seems we will all be hearing soon. Every day I check the mail and the BFE isn't there, or I don't get a phone call, I'm only discouraged because I know that it's just another day of waiting, but I then realize every day I don't hear, I'm one day closer to hearing something.

I hope everyone keeps the faith! and whoever else out there stalks this forum multiple times a day desereves to get that BFE because clearly you want it more than anything! Don't be nervous, be excited for what's to come because the news will come soon, and whatever is going to happen, is going to happen. So embrace the outcome and go from there. Remeber there is still time and still many BFE's to be recieved.

You are wise beyond your years! Thank you for the encouragement. I do have a question... If an appointment has already been received in our state/district that must mean our state has already been reviewed - correct? But everyday there isn't a TWE is good news in my opinion! Good luck everyone.
 
If it was your state then it might mean your district hasn't been reviewed. If it was your district, the candidate may have had an LOA or may have been nominated by another source. Or that candidate may have been the #1 and was appointed, but USNA will go back an review the rest of the district. This seems to be the theme I've seen, and the theme that seems correct from people I've spoken with. I'm not sure at what point the national pool comes in to play, and I'm not sure anyone can really answer that, because people say it's after the MOC slate has been filled, but if many candidates from multiple MOC slates are recieving appointments, it's hard to believe they all came from the national pool. Don't give up. Have a plan B and C and trust that God will lead you!
 
You are correct in your assessment that only the people in admissions know "exactly" how it works. And, to be frank, even they sometimes describe certain aspects of the process incorrectly. The language can be precise in its meaning and one person's "nomination" can be understtood by another to be an "appointment," which can mean something different from "offers of admission." THEN, throw in the understanding/interpretaion of the reader, listener, and/or a reporter . . . well, it IS a confusing process to describe. [This extends to BGOs and regional directgors also. Remember, many of them do not have daily contact with the Academy and they do not have access to much of the information that you want. So, sometimes they tell a candidate something "off the cuff" and the candidate runs with what he/she wants to hear.]

THAT is precisely why you do the BEST you can do at all parts.

THEN, to parphrase a famous sailor: "You ams what you am. You can'ts do no more."
 
BUT, the process is more or less understandable.

This is our second go-around and we knew a great deal more this time than the first.
We understood teh SS process.
We knew the Academy
We knew how to answer the various questions.
We knew what to expect from the BGO
We knew that it takes a long time
We knew when to contact th MOC office
We knew the difference between how Sen. and Cong. handle, generally, teh applications
And so on and so on and so on.

We also knew that FEB appointments were and continue to be relatively rare. [Despite what is said in the Annapolis paper.[

We also know that MOST appointments go out in March. [As do acceptance letters for most schools.]

It goes on and on.

And, with letter in hand, my appointee will be there on July 1. [or whatever day I-day is] bright and early.
And we will know to let them go in the doors of Memorial Hall a kid and come out [more or less about 1800] the doors ofd Bancroft a Mid. [Or, at least teh beginnings of a Mid!]

we will enjoy every one of the 45 minutes that we have at the end of the day. [We will take a drink and a sandwich and a cookie for the scared , frustrated, hot, hungry, tired, plebe that will come out to greet us.] We will encourage our new plebe, tell them to take one day at a time, do what they ar e told. They can't hit you and they can't stop the clock. Keep your eyes on teh boat and we'll see 'em at the other end.

It is LONG, HOT, STRESSFUL day for everybody!
 
I have had my application completely finished since around Thanksgiving, including my 2 Noms and I haven't heard anything at all from the Naval Academy. From WP I at least got a letter saying I was 3Q'd and put in the National Pool. My regional director from USNA told me positive things, but never actually said if I was qualified or in the National Pool or anything. I haven't received a TWE so I'm assuming that no news is good news, but I have no idea where I stand with the academy. I hear stories of candidates who go months on end not hearing anything from the academy and suddenly a BFE arrives in the mail, but we're getting so close to that April 15th "mass mailing" that I feel it just isn't going to happen for me this year. Can anyone shed some light on this dilemma?
 
Our DS is equally stressed, he has a MOC nom, we know he did pretty well on the physical test, DODMERB says he is medically qualified and we assume that he is academically qualified (judging from the averages listed on the USNA page, he is above average)....his BGO is polite, but doesn't have many answers.

We too have run to the mail box every day....heart stops if there is a large envelope in the box and we hold our breath as we leaf through the bills hoping we don't find a TWE...

He has heard nothing at all for several months...and he seems to be losing heart. Yesterday he came home wearing a t-shirt he had just bought of his Plan B school (one of several great schools to which he had been accepted months ago.)

I know that there are many many applicants, but it would be nice if USNA could send some acknowledgement that the applicant is indeed a real candidate.
 
You can definitely email your regional director and ask. That's how I found out I was 3 qed
 
hi... what does "3 Q'd" mean? I'm assuming it means qualified physically, academically, and medically?

3Q'd is qualified medically, physically and scholastically which includes grades, test scores, letters of recommendation, extra curriculars, etc.
 
You must mean the doors of Alumni Hall on June 28, 2012, right?

See what I mean . . . too easy to think one thing and type another.

Memorial Stadium [one here locally], Alumni Hall, it all runs together sometimes.
 
Yes, I know what you mean. But, since you mentioned Memorial Hall earlier, all I can say is that is a special place where words can't truly describe. I believe it is a place where everyone at USNA should visit and get a deeper sense and understanding of the Naval Academy's mission statement.
