Good Morning,

I wondered if there was a time I would be able to meet the various sports/coaches during NASS.

In particular, although it sounds like more of a club sport, I would love to meet with the Jui Jitsu team to learn more about how their season works etc. I currently train several times a week so it is something I would like to continue. There are also a couple of other clubs I would be interested in learning more about.

Will there be a set time for this in our schedule or another time I could try and find out more about this?

Thanks,
C

I'm going to candidate visitation this weekend and gonna ask my mid about the club team as well and hopefully go to a ses. I train Judo/Jiu Jitsu. I'll let you know. Is there anything specific I can ask you? Best, Evan

Awesome! I was mostly just curious about if they train year long or if it is like a "season", if it was everyday, how often they go to comps. in the area etc.

Have a good trip!

My summer seminar was virtual, so your experience will obviously be different, but we had a designated time for meeting with various clubs. I don't recall having time to meet with any sports teams, but our time was also heavily limited by the virtual nature of the event. I'd expect you'll be able to get into contact with whatever teams you're interested in even if there is no specific block of time for that, though.

I wouldn’t expect anytime to personally meet with the coaches or staff. It is summer and many, if not all the teams are not in season. There are a lot of mids who are on the club team abs could tell you. The worst thing that can happen when you are here is you ask and get told no.

You are on the right track that the jiu-jitsu team is classified as an extracurricular activity, not a sports team. It is managed by midshipmen and if they have a coach, they’re a part time volunteer. What might be possible is to ask your squad leader about the team and see if there are any Summer Seminar detailers who are on it. There’s a good chance someone there will be, and they’d be happy to talk about it.

Awesome!

Does anyone know if being on something like Jiu-Jitsu would count as your mando sport?

Ive heard about some ECA's that can count as being the required sport but don't know too much about how this works.

Combat sports are usually given exemptions for intramurals. Each semester (correct me if I am wrong @Kierkegaard), the Dant will send out a last of ECAs that get exemptions. Some are only on a semester basis since they are only "in-season" for that portion of the Ac Year.

If you don't get exemptions, intramurals are a great way to bond with your company. They're also plenty competitive. There's a reason the intramural championship pin is the largest you can get (except maybe Craftmaster).
