To withdraw NROTC scholarship?

Just to make sure, most schools don't offer room and board or any other kind of benefits for NROTC scholarship recipients, right? The school that I would be looking to go to has free tuition for in-state students (Georgia Tech), so I don't think it would make sense to take up a scholarship space. I'm also a little hesitant to reject the scholarship though, in case it ends up being useful. Additionally, NROTC requested a whole bunch of AMIs, so I don't want to do those if it would end up all being for nothing.

Do you want to commission in the Navy? GA Tech NROTC program is one of the best in the country. Assuming you are a GA resident and received the Zell Scholarship, you could apply the NROTC to cover your R&B. There are plenty of schools that offer R&B (and other incentives) for scholarship recipients. You would have no costs at Tech with the Zell and NROTC - plus you get the stipend.

You are also pursuing USNA as well if I remember correctly. The medical clearance for USNA and NROTC is going to be very similar if not the same.

I mean I do, but for me which branch I do isn't as important as serving my country regardless. If AROTC offered room and board I'd do it, because at this point I think I'd be just as happy in the Army as in the Navy. You mentioned applying them to cover room and board- I don't think I could do that because I don't have "significant financial need" according to Tech's OSFA. I've been requested AMIs from both and the NROTC's is MUCH more extensive for some reason.

I think you are correct on the R&B - I am thinking AROTC. It's worth a call to the GT staff to inquire what could be done.

Here is a link that shows the various benefits for AROTC - https://www.goarmy.com/rotc/find-schools.html

My DS is in the "same boat." We have a pre-paid tuition plan for the State University he is most likely to attend. While I believe that if he is gets the NROTC scholarship, he could apply his pre-paid plan (not a 529) to room and board, I don't think it would cover much of the R & B. We may have to take some loans to pay for the R&B. So, we may be in a position where we may too decide to decline the NROTC scholarship. In our case, Army ROTC would be much more financially beneficial. However, DS has zero interest in the Army.

Here is a list on the NROTC website that shows which schools offer what. https://www.netc.navy.mil/Commands/Naval-Service-Training-Command/NROTC/Additional-Benefits/

Hm, sucks how that works out. I'll mull it over for a little bit before outright rejecting, but good (or bad?) to see other people in the same boat.

If your prepaid is in Florida, the scholarship and prepaid funds get paid To the school each semester and if there is any left over, the money is transferred into the students bank account.

@NJROTC-CC - while opinions can and do change, I would avoid making a choice on which branch to join based on the most financially beneficial option. If your DS has zero interest in the Army I suggest he continue down the Navy path.

Yes. Agree. Financial consideration will have no part to play in DS’s decision regarding which branch to pursue. He is only considering Navy and Coast Guard at present.
