The start date for accepting applications for class of 2022 was June 1st. My son was told when he visited the Academy in March that the sooner you send everything in, the better, so he completed part 1 online on June 1st and today he got delivery confirmation that the rest of his application materials were delivered today. There's a long wait ahead obviously, but is it true that it's better to get things in early? I also wondered if anyone else out there was getting their stuff in this early too.

It can't hurt, but be aware it's not FIFO, first in, first out. Some who submit way early, hear way late.

If you look back at previous year's appointment threads, you can see the bell curve and types of associated noms obtained/applied for.

Kp has rolling admissions, if you match what they want they'll give you an LOA if you don't they'll put you on hold until they have a better picture of the class they're bringing in.

DS is waiting for his first SAT scores to be delivered. The Director of Candidate Guidance sent a form letter.

They probably don't give LOA very often though, I bet? DS is homeschooled and doesn't have a class rank; how will that work then?

Each academy has instructions for home schoolers. I know USNA says to just put 1/1 for class rank.

joriebell: Not to early. The process appears to be fairly easy, and, while you are not able to get it done in a day, looks like it should take maybe a long weekend. But, just to be clear, if anybody has any thought that getting through the application(s) is easy, erase your mind of that thought right now. lol. You are at the right time to start. Each application has "20" different steps, and "20" different items. Some things can be reused, some cannot. My advise is to start a folder-computer and hard copy--for each application you are going to fill out. That is a folder for each Academy, and a folder for each nominating authority. Each application is different. some are hard copy-like USMMA, some are electronic. Some nominations are electronic some not. DS had one nominating authority that had about 20 essays. each application requires letters of recommendation, some require specific ones some do not. Some require pictures, some do not. you get the drift, So, get your folder systems in place. Set up a spreadsheet with all of the requirements and the sub-requirements with due dates. Set up a calendar system. Start asking about letters of recommendation now. (and on the letters--be sure you talk to the folks, and ask to see the letter first--or a draft of it--You cannot afford to have a "student is an average student with no drive" letter go out). BTW, you are responsible to get the letters in on time, even though some are required to be sent direct from the person making the recommendation. make sure they know that, and give them a fedex slip to do it. ;) Good luck

joriebell: LOA is designed to reel in a student that the Academy really really wants. It could be an athlete, a stellar student, an underrepresented minority, and the like. LOA's are early. You will see on this forum that most are given very early in the process--November-ish and maybe within a month or two after. I will say that it is a push to get everything done by then, but very do-able.

I really appreciate all of the insight!

In April he wrote to the two senators in our state and the representative and sent everything that was requested. On June 1st he submitted the Part 1 online application and also mailed his current HS transcript, the CFA which he did May 31st, 6 letters of recommendation, his biography, and ACT scores. The only thing he wasn't able to provide was class rank because he's homeschooled and the 7th semester grades because obviously he won't have them until December. He requested 6 letters of rec because he's homeschooled so the school teacher letter comes from mom (me!) which obviously doesn't hold as much weight! He also got letters from his priest where he's an altar boy, two Scout leaders (one graduated from Air Force Academy), a woman he worked for, and I can't remember the other one.

It has been his dream for awhile to go to Kings Point; my brother was a graduate from 1987 and has been telling my son about it since he was little. Unfortunately my brother passed away two years ago and so wasn't able to provide a letter of recommendation. But my son has been reading/preparing for the past year and spent 8 months getting ready for the CFA - he's improved alot since he took his first practice test last fall. He got all of his materials ready early so that on June 1st he could send everything in. He visited in March with my husband and when I asked him if he liked it, hated it, etc he told me that now that he's seen it he knows there is no where else at all he wants to go.

I am really hoping this works out for him, but we'll just have to wait and see! He did hear from two of the senators that they received his applications and that they're complete so happy everything is in order anyway. He knows, and I know too, that the process is very selective though. At the end of the summer he'll start thinking about Plan B but hasn't done that yet.

Thanks for the good luck!

Oh my goodness! He just checked his "MyUSMMA" and he passed the CFA and only has two items in missing documents; "Grade 12 courses in progress" and "7th semester grades". And of course nomination isn't fulfilled yet. Wow that was fast though! He is on cloud nine!

The next 6 months will fly by...try to enjoy it. At the same time, after congressional nominations are complete, time will severly slow down and it will seem like official word will take forever....just hang in there. It's a wild ride, but is worth it. Good luck!
