Interested to hear from others what were some of the top useful/most wanted items family brought with them to A-day? We plan on bringing items to PW as well; but, since A-day is first thought we'd get a head start. Thanks in advance!

I am curious too. I read that what they can have may be squadron dependent. So far DS has only mentioned wanting his sunglasses, AirPods and photo of the dog. After they return from Jack's Valley, I hope they learn more about what they can/can't have.

Any big bulky items (printer, monitor, mattress pad etc), order and have it shipped to a Colorado Springs store location for pickup the day before A-Day. This is especially useful if you are flying to A-Day. Hopefully you will get to speak with your basic cadet and find out what they are allowed to have in their room. We also purchased small storage containers (shoebox size) and basic medical supplies - think band-aids, ibuprofen, tums, etc.

Wonderful responses so far! It will be squadron specific what is allowed and your DD/DS's preferences.

You might also see if there is any coordination on the BCT squadron pages with parents spearheading a collective drive for food or treats. Ideally you can make parent-friends with someone local (and with base access!) and/or with older USAFA siblings to add to your go-to parent network.

What are the BCT squadron pages?

As parents, depending the squadron and flight your DS or DD is in, there are pages for each. That way, if you have a squadron specific question or concern, you can ask other parents whose BCs are in the same one. And you get to know other parents better in a smaller group.

Thank you for the answer. Is that here on the forum, or somewhere else?

What Basics can have during basic is sometimes squadron dependent, but for A-day, they won't be Basics anymore - they're cadets. Sunglasses, AirPods, and photos are fine. Nothing during the academic year is squadron-dependent - all the rules on what unrecognized cadets can and cannot have are written in the Cadet Standards and Duties Extract.

I would recommend things to get them settled into school and cadet life. Having a monitor, wireless mouse, etc is so nice and also helps efficiency. They can have two 24" monitors or one 34" monitor. Unrecognized cadets aren't supposed to have speakers but...🤣 Also, a box fan is a total blessing to keep temperatures below 1000 degrees Celcius.

Our cadet wanted her iPad and miniature projector. Since they cannot have TV’s they would set up the projector in the room and hang a sheet on the wall on the weekends and watch Netflix. These types of items could be stored in their footlocker. Her roommate had a wireless speaker that they also used to watch the movies.
