Hello community,

I just received my transcripts from school today and am not satisfied with it at all. Of course, I was expecting it but I didnt think it would be this discouraging.
Last semester, I earned a 3.6 GPA. However, even with this GPA, my cumulative is still a 3.3 ish. I am very discouraged at this point but also am hopeful as I am trying to compensate for it by getting better SAT scores and writing good personal statements.

Due to my GPA and the level of competitiveness that USMA has become now, what more can I do? I sincerely plan on earning at least a 3.7 my 1st semester senior year but my cumulative will still be around a 3.4.

I don't believe the GPA matters as much as your class rank because, you see, maybe a 3.3 Cumulative GPA is really good at your school but absolutely terrible at another. Your rank is 100000000x more important.
 
Yes Nam, class rank, I believe, matter more.

What's your class rank and standardized test scores? I can't remember.
 
In addition to the above, it also matters how what courses you took and how rigorous your school is.

you'll be fine! I don't have that great of a GPA either... but the all the above factors make a difference. :thumb:
 
I'm in almost the opposite situation, our school works off of a 4.0 scale with AP and honors classes weighted for 5 points. Here a 3.8-4.0 is pretty average, while a 3.3 might be considered under par. I'm not saying this to discredit your GPA, I'm just showing how important class rank is because it shows your GPA in comparison with your immediate peers (which eliminates the cross-school GPA differences).

our school JUST began the weighting process for AP classes.
I took 2 AP courses as a junior and this year ill be taking 2 more AP classes. I received a 4 for APUSH and 5 for AP Lang.
I do not know my class rank yet as they have not finalized everyone's transcripts yet. I am hoping that after they weigh my AP classes, my class rank will go up (is this how it works?)

my SAT is a 1870 but I think im going to focus more on the ACT as im not the "think outside the box" type of test taker..(the movie Inception confused the crap out of me! haha)
 
if your school starts to weigh APs then that will vault your GPA/rank past those who got comparable grades in regular courses

The first and all important point is to look through your immediate concerns and decide if you wish to pursue a "profession of arms" career as a US Army officer. Consider that question carefully and do not have West Point as part of your consideration. If you insist that West Point is the only avenue you will accept in becoming an officer in the US Army, then that will limit your ability to gain entry. Thats the rub.

If you are convinced that the career as an officer in the US Army is what you seek, then seek all ways to become an officer along with West Point.

You should be applying for your ROTC scholarship now as well as the superb Kings Point Academy. The USMMA (Kings Point) is a great school and is a great avenue to becoming a US Army officer. And the ROTC will allow you to use almost any college in the USA as your way to become a US Army officer. If you do not pursue these avenues as well as West Point - it says alot about your true motives.

As far as West Point goes, a "secret" is that admission is almost solely a function of how dedicated you are in gaining entry. Think hard on the fact that the age cutoff to West Point is 23. Many gain entry to West Point one, two, three or even more years after high school graduation. Of course meaningful and always improving activity must be shown right up to the time you enter Beast.

Therefore, anyone of sound character, serious intent and solid academics (and I do not mean 800/800 SATs or a 4.0) can gain entry. The question is how much ownership are you going to "take on" in the process. How serious are you about going to West Point. If you do not gain entry this round, go to a college and take ROTC and then if you still wish to go to West Point, reapply with greater maturity and improved academics (keep taking SATs). Your level of intensity and desire will be noted. Or you may find the avenue you can take now - ROTC, college without ROTC, USMMA and so on - are actually the right avenue.

I dont wish to sound mystical here, but I have found that if if an applicant takes on full responsibility for entry to West Point and will keep seeking admission right until 23, they almost always gain entry. If you truly want it, I would bet you will get it.

But that goes to what I first said - make sure you want to be an officer in the US Army.
 
My high school Registrar sent my transcripts a little over two weeks ago and they sill haven't been posted, so I was just wondering how long did it take for West Point to receive your transcripts after you or your high school sent them in? I live in California too so there is some delay on that as well.
 
They took a while to upload my transcripts. My suggestionn is to wait one more week and then, if the transcripts are not posted, contact your Admissions Office, see if they received the envelopes/transcripts.
