Just out of curiosity... does USNA (or any other academy) pay for flights and other transportation to/from the Academy? I believe the first flight to I-Day is paid for, but what about flights home at the end of the school year or flights for other midshipmen besides plebes?
When midshipmen, and military members in general, are traveling for personal reasons or while on leave, they pay for their own travel.
If a military member is traveling on orders/official business, the military pays.
Reporting to “the place from whence induction into the military occurs” is indeed paid for. I had a set of orders and a ticket voucher to fly from Jacksonville, FL, to Providence, RI for Navy OCS.
One variant is if a member is outside the U.S. on official duty, and has to go back to the U.S. for a family emergency, the military gets them to a U.S. air port of entry, and the member then pays to go wherever they want. Similar to this is if stationed overseas for a certain number of years, the member gets one funded RT to nearest U.S. air port of entry. I forget all the nuances.
At USNA, mids will get official travel to go to various events, training, cruises. Home on leave? No.
