Do cadets use an army issued bag to travel home, or do they use their own personal luggage?

Great question, especially with graduation coming up! My mom always buys a set of luggage for graduation. *Hopefully* my DS won't need it.

Yes, I am thinking of Christmas gifts. He will need it if he attends a University, but hopefully will get to use it for West Point! Haha.

A high quality duffel with backpack straps that fulfills carry on requirements. We found a good one through Ogio. This duffel/backpack will be able to hold all the items they will need for beast and can be used for easy transfer (if packed correctly) on R-day. Label it carefully so it doesn't get lost on Rday. With the backpack straps he/she can wear it while carrying the additional bags on Rday. He put his low quarters in the shoe pocket, tied his boots to the outside, and wore his tennis shoes. My cadet uses his as his primary luggage when coming home. Now that he is no longer a plebe, and has more storage and will need some additional luggage for school travel abroad. This bag would be good for any type of university.

Thank you, great info.

... ahhh the good 'ol duffle bag. One of 'em can easily weigh 50-65 lbs.

... so now I'm having flashbacks doing the duffle bag drag during my baptism of fire in Iraq . On my 5th day, I was in the LZ waiting for my ride to join my team in the desert, loaded bags and baggage. Beside the full battle rattle, I was humping a mountain rucksack and holding two duffel bags. Then a mortar barrage started poking holes in the LZ. I sprinted 100 meters to the nearest concrete shelter. What a nice welcome!

A duffle is good because they can stash it somewhere easily when not in use, though my son also has a carryon suitcase he took back with him at one point.

A duffle with backpack straps for RDay is good. They end up carrying a LOT of stuff throughout the day so being able to carry it on the back is nice. DS used a 59L (not full!! only filled to about 50L) eagle creek duffle. That’s what he now uses to travel back and forth from post to home.

Whatever you do, do not buy a roller suitcase. Those wheels will do you no good when the cadre make you carry that suitcase around in your arms. New cadets are not permitted to be dragging a bag around. As stated, a good duffel with backpack straps is exactly what to bring. Once the academic year starts, then they can upgrade their luggage. But my son still uses the backpack duffel he carried on R-Day.

Hello guys. Please could someone tell me the type of clothes that are advisable to bring as a new cadet ?

Underwear and socks. The rest will be Army issue. The clothes my DS wore on RDay were all that he had for several months after ADay. Plebes cannot wear civilian clothing when on Post. If they are on pass, they have to leave post and arrive back at post in uniform. They are supposed to wear their uniform until they reach their final destination (however, cadets often change on the train.)

Here is a good video from some class of 2026 cadets to the 2027 cadets on recommended items to bring. The common theme is more underwear and sock. Although on another string on this forum a Plebe said his company didnt allow them to wear personal sock. That was not my DS's experience for Beast. He was allowed to wear the socks and underwear he brought. Best advice is to follow the packing list, to include the optional items.

Current cadet here-
Most cadets travel with their R-day bag or some other luggage they bring back from one of their trips home. And yes, people who use the green flight bag for traveling get (good-naturedly) teased!

Ok thanks
