Travel reimbursement?

I’m getting a little ahead of myself, but in reading last year’s 2025 appointment booklet, I see cadets are reimbursed for the cost of travel from home to BCT. However, they are responsible for travel costs during all holiday and semester breaks? Correct?

Correct - the Air Force will pay to get you to them and your final trip home - after you depart the Air Force (whether that is early and not graduate, leave the AF after 5 years, or after a 30 year career). Parents/cadets are responsible for all personal travel in-between. During a cadet's time at USAFA, there will likely be several official trips for training or activities like sports or club team related trips - those are considered official business and would be covered (all or in part) by the AF.

Regarding travel, search this site for tips and tricks---refundable airfare, be flexible, let the Cadet/MIDN coordinate, etc. I-days, Parents weekends, etc all at the mercy of the Academies. Timing of breaks is fluid depending on military obligations and exam schedules.

One of the great inside tricks you learn once out of your commissioning source, is when an official trip is booked, you can add on personal travel and leave, as long as you pay for any airfare, rental, lodging, etc. associated with that, and be meticulous about your travel claim.

DH and I had several tours apart. I was in HI, and had a quarterly meeting in San Francisco. He was in San Diego. Navy paid for my RT to SF, lodging, rental car, per diem. I paid for my airfare to SD post-meeting, and any difference between the fare from SFO to HNL and San Diego-HNL, and only claimed per diem for official business days.
