I'm a junior looking at service academy's specifically the Naval Academy and Coast Guard Academy . I have a tree nut allergy and was wondering if this would get me disqualified? In addition I was wondering if any academies would be more lenient with the allergy?

If you were on a rescue mission, crawling on your stomach under trees that are dropping nuts on the ground, would that be a problem?

Search these forums for tree nut allergy and you will find a litany of advice. I believe you will have to do a challenge with an allergist to prove that it is not an anaphylactic allergy. Best of luck to you.

It depends on the type of allergy and the severity and the academy. You should see an allergy specialist now who is very familiar with the academies and DODMERB requirements. There are treatments available to lower the IgG levels of certain allergies but it takes time. My understanding is you would need to finish the treatment a year prior to being accepted if you plan to get a waiver. Oral testing should be done if there is any question regarding your IgG levels being on the fence. It's not always cut and dry. If you pass an oral challenge a waiver is possible.

My son was diagnosed with a peanut allergy as well as hazelnuts thru blood work when he was young. We always carried an epipen and avoided nuts. When he was interested in applying to USNA and CGA i thought he would never be able to get in. They will automatically disqualify for an allergy that can be anaphylactic. After he applied and before we even started the DODMERB he went to an allergist who tested is bloodwork and looked at the components and determined it would be safe for him to do a food challenge. He completed a food challenge for both nuts and successfully passed. The doctor said he had Oral Allergy Syndrome. Proteins found in certain raw fruits, vegetables and nuts are similar to those found in pollen. These proteins confuse the immune system and cause an allergic reaction. It is not life threatening. So after my son was DQ'd he received a waiver and we sent in the notes from the Allergist and then he was cleared.

So my advice would be to go a good Allergist who has hx of doing food challenges and desensitization and figure out how severe your allergy is. If it is not anaphylactic in nature you will most likely be cleared. But be proactive and go now so you have time if you do need to do some desensitization program.

good luck

As long as you don't go Chair Force you'll be fine. They have flight attendants handing out bagged peanuts on every flight.

Former BGO here...Disqualified with a tree nut allergy almost always. I have seen exceptions but on a rare basis. DM me for more info and I may be able to offer some advice that came from a Vice Admiral on tjis specific situation.
