My son was diagnosed with a peanut allergy as well as hazelnuts thru blood work when he was young. We always carried an epipen and avoided nuts. When he was interested in applying to USNA and CGA i thought he would never be able to get in. They will automatically disqualify for an allergy that can be anaphylactic. After he applied and before we even started the DODMERB he went to an allergist who tested is bloodwork and looked at the components and determined it would be safe for him to do a food challenge. He completed a food challenge for both nuts and successfully passed. The doctor said he had Oral Allergy Syndrome. Proteins found in certain raw fruits, vegetables and nuts are similar to those found in pollen. These proteins confuse the immune system and cause an allergic reaction. It is not life threatening. So after my son was DQ'd he received a waiver and we sent in the notes from the Allergist and then he was cleared.
So my advice would be to go a good Allergist who has hx of doing food challenges and desensitization and figure out how severe your allergy is. If it is not anaphylactic in nature you will most likely be cleared. But be proactive and go now so you have time if you do need to do some desensitization program.
good luck
