Triple Qualified Acceptance Rate?

It means you're a fully-qualified candidate. Medical, Physical, and Nomination, I believe.
Medically, physically, and academically. You need to be 3Q in addition to having a nomination to be appointed. Being medically/physically qualified but not academically makes you eligible for the prep school.

My DS was in that boat.. 33 ACT, 4.6 GPA, made an A in AP Calculus, Eagle scout, Boy's State, XC, etc... was just disqualified from USMA. The reason stated as "due to a review of your academic record". So, I don't know that there is really an exact way to go about getting in. Just do your best and hope for the best and let the cards fall where they may. Good luck!
OMG! he didn't get in with those phenomenal stats? Now I'm worried.

I know a cadet who had similar stats to your son. He did a year at New Mexico Military Institute reapplied and graduated in 2020. Currently a 2nd LT at Fort Bliss. Never could figure out why he was denied the first time. DS tells me he knows fellow cadets who finally got in on their 3rd try and even one who did 4 years of college received a BS then applied to WP and got in.

Not saying that this could be the reason in your particular cases, but I've heard the teacher recs/eval are also very important. They have to match the stellar grades on paper. I wonder how much sway these have on academic record.

It also depends on which state you are from and how the nomination committee ranked you nomination.

Was this a letter on the portal or a TWE in the mail? If it was a letter on the portal, this early, it is worth a phone call from your child to his or her Regional Admissions Officer (not the FFR--but the actual admissions team member at USMA). sometimes they do this by mistake.

Here was the clarification email my DS received...

**** ‘Academic’ is a very general term that basically encompassed everything that is not medical or related to the nomination. Your disqualification was a combination of things not related to your academics specifically but your CFA (10%) and the leadership aspect (30%) of your files evaluation. That Leadership portion comprises your HS sports, extra-curriculars and SOEs. This is where I would focus your attention if you are interested in applying next year. If you go to college somewhere and do well (with strong course load) that will help as well.

My DS has tons of leadership so at this point, I just think he will let it go. Sounds like for whatever reason, he isn't a good fit.

A letter in the portal and he contacted the admissions team. Thank you!

sorry to hear. but what i don't understand is why they gave you 3Q to begin with if they think leadership is not sufficient. do you know your CFA score?

There will always be more fully qualified candidates with nominations than there are seats available in the class. Only USMA can give insight into the decision.

Sorry to hear that, but an Academic DQ can also be caused by a less than stellar SOE. Admissions will never tell you that, because they strictly protect confidentiality of those responses.

I always tell my candidates to develop strong relationships with SOE teachers and their counselor's well before asking them to be an SOE. Make sure they really know you and can tell a good story about you. Sit down with them beforehand with a recent resume so that they understand the whole package and your background before they are asked to provide an opinion on a narrow part of you...

Don't let a DQ discourage you. Look at ROTC - lots of great options there! That is where majority of our officers come from...

@emcconnell
Army Vet beat me to it but based on the information you have posted previously about his overall file, it seems that an unfavorable SOE may be the "Occam's Razor" here. That is one thing that he has SOME control over if he decides to apply again. Developing strong relationships with his college professors (i.e. engaging in class, utilizing office hours, etc.) there are some profs here who might even be able to expand more on what would cause them to write a good SOE if asked.

As is stated above and elsewhere, don't let one "no" discourage him. This forum is full of stories of candidates getting in after their first attempt and many are happy it went that way (after the fact).
