Turned down for SLS.

In addition to SLS at SA's, candidates should also look into attending their state's Boys State/Girls State program. Your local American Legion can sponsor you which usually covers the program fees.

Just want to let you know......son who is currently a plebe at WP - 2013 was also not accepted at WP. I can assure based on a phone call 20 minutes ago......................he is in cold...................cold WP! You still have a chance!

This means little!

So I got a letter from them today saying I was rejected. And I have two questions.

Firstly, the said something along the lines of, "we've confirmed you as a candidate for admission."
Does that mean I'm considered a competitive candidate or are they just sugar-coating it?

Secondly, if WP isn't in my top choices, should I still pursue an appointment?

I was in the exact same situation as you are. USMA was my #1 choice and then I got rejected to their SLS. I was able to get into USNA SLS and USAFA SLS, but was still unhappy with the USMA rejection. I thought the process was all but over for me. However, I stuck with it and tried my hardest in school, athletics, and on the applications (interviews, etc.). Then, my Senior year, I was thrilled to see I got a LOA first from USMA. This uplifted my spirits and next thing I knew I got a nice black diploma-like folder saying that I received an appointment to USMA's class of 2014 on behalf of the President of the United States.

As you can see, when there is no hope, stick with it. In the end, you will get what you want! Learn from my experience!

That just means that you have a file open with them.
Don't let the SLS news get you down though, I didn't get into SLS and I just got my letter of appointment.

Right now they're only viewing applications for the class of 2014. As far as I know, if you're applying for the class of 2015 they won't review those applications until summer or fall.

My son also received a rejection letter for SLS, but had an LOA in hand by the beginning of November and is now a cadet -- instead of going to sls, he applied for boys' state, went and had a great time. I wouldn't read too much into the rejection, but I would look for ways to be competitive (boys state, grade, sat scores, etc.). Good luck!
