TWE

The many young ladies who received appointments obviously earned that honor. I suspect some of those ladies may actually have had higher grades and scores, others may not. Since the appointments are based on a large set of criteria - grades/scores being about 60% - we never have the full picture. Only the admissions people do. They have a tough, tough job. And quite frankly, they are very good at it.

At the risk of repeating myself, those that are still in the game in March and beyond are all qualified, hard-working, deserving young people. There are only a small number of appointments and too many very qualified applicants. Even tougher for those who are in a highly competitive area. I truly hope that those who received TWEs this late in the game will reapply next year - but for now, embrace your plan B. You may find that it really is your Plan A. :)

By the way -- all those awards and accolades you've earned to get this appointment? Yah, means nothing to those mids that will train you. You're just an average Joe in a class with equally talented and brilliant plebes. You suddenly find out that you're not that special. A tough lesson to learn, but my DD did & is better for it.

Been reading the posts here for a few weeks. Mt wonderful son finally called his BGO here on Long Island to ask what was up with this process........having not received a LWE or good news envelope............he tells him that he was notified on March 25 th that NONE of his candidates were being offered appointments. What a terrible way to receive this news. My son is an outstanding scholar, leader, great shape, 3Q, invited down in September, etc...........like many of the fine young people I have read about on here. He was glad to get this news and be able to forge ahead with PLAN B now. A great school, with great partial scholarship, and applying for their NROTC Unit.
My heart hurts for him because he worked so damn hard. BUT I know that God never shuts one door without throwing open another one. Never. He will get to where he is suppose to be one way or another. Life has many paths.
Actually kowing my son as we do, trust me its USNA LOSS not to get him, LOL He goes 24/7 for whatever he wants and believes in.
Good luck to all you great young Americans who took this enormous challenge on!! You will all do great in life. Stand proud and forge ahead.
Proud dad on Long Island NY

I am living proof of the statement above. In the middle of my college years, I decided to pursue by dream of becoming a pilot in the military. My first choice was USAF and second was USN. I went down both paths to the point I was awaiting word from each service. As I was about to graduate from school I received word from USAF that I was not accepted. To this day, I still remember that news as the most crushing and disappointing I have ever received. I graduated from school and a few week later, I was accepted to USN. USN, my original Plan B, turned out to be my Plan A and one of my life's biggest blessings. As you may tell from my avatar, the rest is history, with no regrets, no unanswered questions and cherished memories that will last a lifetime. So, for those who are now contemplating Plan B, embrace it as you have embraced past endeavors and be prepared to be amazed. Cheers everyone.

I didn't make the claim that USNA lowered standards. That's why I asked for references. I figured that if someone makes that claim, they can back it up, yes?

Since you asked me for sources I assume you are referring to me. I never made the claim that they lowered standards for women. I made the claim that they were accepting more women. Big difference :)

Oops - my apologies then.
It wasn't really a condemnation anyway. :p It's been an interesting discussion.

Aviators rock!:D

I had the pleasure of working with aviators and AF pilots at Wright Patt (fighter aircraft simulation/flight control systems.) I always thought that aviators were just a little more crazy than most. Must be the night time landing on a moving platform thing.

I would love if a BGO would let us know how the normal process work re the waitlist letters. That would be really interesting :) eg- do waitlist letters always come out after all the appointment letters go out (or at least the number that they think it will take to fill the class given a "normal" yield.

Here is my general understanding of the "waitlist". Each year, USNA sets the number of students they would like to have in the incoming class. Keeping in mind that some appointments may be declined, USNA offers more appointments than this number. Appointments need to be accepted or declined by either May 1 or 5 days after receipt of the appointment, whichever occurs later. If the number of those declining appointments causes the number of the incoming class to go below the target, names will be drawn from the waitlist. The names on the waitlist are ranked and those at the top get drawn first. I don not know how they are ranked. This will happen until the target number for the incoming class is met. The names drawn are done so without consideration of nominating source/s. Just a straight pick from the top and continuing until the class size is met. Candidates on the waitlist will be asked if they would like to remain on the waitlist or not. Those who remain on the waitlist will not know of their final status until late May to early June. There have been instances where appointments have been offered in June for a variety of reasons such as late change of heart or injury. So, it's not over until it's over. Hope this helps. Cheers everyone and congrats to the Class of 2019.

My son was told he was getting a rejection from Blue and Gold Officer, letters suposely mailed 3/25.........still have not received jack sh*t here......sillyness. Question is it a rejection a "rejection", OR are some rejection your on waiting list? This is one bizzare process.
God Bless those accepted and those not. This is ONE HARD process and anyone who made to the end deserves big applause and a hug. This is NOT like being rejected from an ordinary college. HARD HARD process.

Ca3nemom: How do you know this young lady was less qualified...Did you see her WCS...Did you seen all of her accomplishments...Did you see the slate she was competing with...were you in the admissions meeting with Dean Latta when the decision was made to offer her an appointment?

My guess is the answers are NO.

I understand you are disappointed BUT please do not play the gender card. It make you sound very bitter and shallow and I am sure you are not a shallow person or you would not have raised the child you did.

These young ladies (my daughter included) who have received APPOINTMENTS are QUALIFIED and maybe.. just maybe have more qualifications than others.

(BTW my daughter received an appointment to all 3 academies.)

BTW, there are 5 service academies.

If it's true that some rejection letters were mailed on 3/25 and some are still unaware of their status, that could possibly mean that there are appointments yet to arrive as well. Just food for thought, here's to hoping!

We also found out that following that conversation with BGO that they are told NOT to give info to potential candidates because things often change during process. Seems odd that other students he was assigned seemed to have received their LWE last week..............I know my mailbox isnot broken, LOL. Odd, weird, maybe it comes today, maybe something changed...........wishfull thinkin on a parents part. IDK. Part of me also does not care. I know how hard all these kids worked to get into that final pool of candidates. And as other posters said this isnot like being rejected from a regular college process. A few clics of a mouse on Common App, and maybe a few extra essays. This is a dedication that takes at least a year. I personally would NOT encourage any young person to take this on. Eagle Scout, Quarterback, 1500 SAT, whatever you think your bringing to the admissions table it doesnot seem to help if your not in a needed slot of category.
Best wishes to all.

hi..no. Only interested in Naval Officer stuff. He will attend an NROTC unit as a college programmer and re apply for scholarship. Hes not sure he wants to endure the work and letdown of doing this again. Cant blame him. As a parent this ws alot of work and such a small acceptance rate. 90 percent or more of officers in US Navy and USMC donot come from Annapolis. Which means there are MANY ways to reach your goals in life. Key is to NEVER let anyone stop you, find another door- there are many. Persistence and dedication ALWAYS win in the end. All young people who worked so hard and are disappointed- chins up. You are all great kids and winners. Fight on and your gonna end up where you want to be in four years. Watch. (BIG SMILE)

I just want to say to all the candidates who received a TWE this year that you should be extremely proud of yourself. Applying to a military academy is not like applying to a regular college. It takes more work, dedication and willpower to go through the process. It really does test you mentally, academically and physically. There are so many steps involved- one of the hardest obtaining a nomination.
Be proud that you made it through and were considered for admission. Not many people get to the last round of admissions. Embrace that you have taken this incredible ride and embrace that you have accomplished this incredible feat.

It's been a week since I recieved my TWE and although there are times where it hits me (hard) like a brick that I won't be taking the oath during I-day this year and sleeping in Bancroft Hall, I am getting excited for my plan B (either RIT, Penn State, or USD) and getting ready for 2020. I truly believe that God has a plan for me and if it includes my plan B, then lets do it!

If you have spirit and dedication, you will get to your goal. I am proud to be interacting (even if we've never met) with such amazing people and parents who have raised incredible children. I would be honored to serve with all of you in the future.

Let's get pumped for the second roller coaster! This one will be better and even more exciting. And as always, GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY!

Wow, what an awesome individual you are! Your dear parents should be very proud. I know I am so proud of my DD for her valiant efforts to reach this same goal this year, and we must remember there is always a reason why things happen when they happen. I do hope if all this year's TWE's that reapply next year get in, then I would be proud if you and my DD crossed paths and became friends and served together after graduation. Just. Awesome.
GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY!

It's like Deja Vu, all over again

Ahhhh, definitely smells like spring on SAF! The mudslinging begins each and every year once those TWE’s start blooming. Did candidates and their families simply not take note before that females, recruited athletes, URMs, prepsters, and international candidates make up a portion of each and every class?

"It's been this way for over a century and will probably continue"

Yes, it will.

I am not seeing any negativity or mudslinging here...quite the opposite!
