My kiddo received the dreaded TWE in the portal this morning.

I know all of us are hunting around for numbers wondering where our applicants stand- wanted to give you these stats from the letter- 13,500 opened files for the class of 2027. 4,000 received nominations and are competing for the 1,200 spots. 1 in 11 who enter the admissions process gain entrance into West Point. Of those 1,200, 85% of those who accept USMA appointment will have graduated in the top 5th of their high school class.

Wishing you all the best of luck in this process and am so thankful to have been a part of some wonderful insight, discussions, and support on my short time in this forum! Godspeed, stay safe, and thank you to the class of 2027 for your service. I know you will do amazing things!!!

I'm sure your kiddo will go on to do amazing things as well. What is the new Plan A?

Thank you for posting those stats! My next ds is heading to SLE in June and will be applying to the class of 2028. There is a lot of competition for these spots.

So sorry to hear that, hope the best for Plan B for your kid.

Not sure if I can believe that stat for 85% graduating in the top 5% of their high school class. Class profiles that Army posts on their site for the past two classes only had ~25% graduate in the top 5%. That would be a hefty swing from recent class profiles if accurate.

I was surprised by that stat too- but it was verbatim from his letter.

**Disregard** not verbatim! I misquoted. The letter said 85% in the top 5th of their class not 5% percent **

Top 5th is same as top 20%, not top 5%

Also, it looks like applications were up by about 1,000 this year over last year.

Frozen7, I wish your kiddo the very best.

Random question- does anyone know if TWE receivers are still in the running for USMAPS, or is the big no the final word?

A TWE tends to be the end of things. Someone in the running for USMAPS or an AOG fellowship will normally receive that information in advance of the TWE.

@DrMom My DS received his TWE in January only a couple of short days after being 3Q. Last week he was notified he had been offered the AOG Scholarship, which he will accept. I’m sure there are many candidates that will get offered prep in advance of the TWE… he got super lucky, IMO.

That is true but you mustn't hold your heart on this. There are also applicants who will receive a TWE and then receive an offer of admission. You must plan to move on in your life after you receive a TWE.

Readers sometimes hang on to exceptions rather than rules. We don’t know decision making why there are exceptions.

Did somebody else turn down an offer, opening up an unexpected slot for instance? And had they not turned it down, the twe would be the final interaction?

USMA is a wonderful and ambitious goal. So completely understand the disappointment. At the same time, remember that most Army officers are products of ROTC. And that 6-12 months after commissioning, no one really notices or cares how that officer gained their butter bars. And that beyond this point, it’s all about performance, performance, performance.

Arguably the two greatest American military leaders of the last 40 years were ROTC grads: Colin Powell and James Mattis. Hopefully your son’s Plan B includes an application for ROTC scholarship. It’s a great way to go.

The last time I know someone who got AOG and then got accepted to USMA it was...someone turned down an appointment (in Utah) and then the AOG person from UTAH was appointed...and is now an officer...it all works out...but you cannot hang your hat on it.

Also, our current Chairman is out of Princeton.

MY DS's portal reflected a TWE and then about 10 days later he received an AOG scholarship.
