Hello,

I just received an appointment to USMA, but am currently waiting to hear back from the Naval Academy before I accept my appointment. Should I still complete the tattoo form and birth certificate forms on my portal now even though I am still undecided? Or should I wait until I have made a final decision. Thank you!

Also, just out of curiosity, do BFEs only go to people who have already accepted their appointment, or is it sent out to all people offered admission? Plus, in my portal, there’s the big green box that says I was offered admission, but I never received a letter of correspondence that said offer of admission. Does everyone get that as well? Thanks for the help

Congratulations!

I take it from your question that USMA is either your 2nd choice or else you are not sure?

BFE are sent to those offered appointments, not accepted.

As far as I can tell you will eventually get a letter in your official correspondence section of the portal. It took about a week or so if I recall for son's to show up there. His letter said he should accept or decline by May 1, 2022.

My advice would be to wait to fill out any admissions forms until you are sure you are going to accept. I see no reason to create any additional admin burden for the admissions staff until you are ready to commit.

Thanks for the response! I appreciate it!

Yes, Navy is my first choice, and USMA is my second choice. I received an LOA and a nom to West Point which prompted the appointment, but I did receive a senator and rep nom to navy as well, so I figured I might have a chance to get both. If I get navy I’ll accept it, but if I don’t get navy I will accept West Point. I’ll be at one of the academies, just not sure which one.

Figure out what your deadline is. You have until your deadline...(it maybe 30 April...check the letter your received.)
Do not feel rushed.
Do not fill out the forms until you decide...you will have plenty of time even if you do not hit accept until later in April or closer to your deadline.

My son accepted USMA in the beginning of April last year.
Then he looked at the long checklist of things required to do before R-Day in June.
One was getting a dental exam form filled out with Panorex Xray (both of which we had to submit to USMA—including copies of the actual panorex films).

USMA also strongly recommended having wisdom teeth removed. (This was also required by my son’s dentist before she would sign off on his dental form.)

Oh also— he had to get all of this done by some date in May (I can’t quite remember the date.)

So we got a rush dentist appointment and then a rush oral surgeon consult and rush wisdom tooth removal x4. Then a week later we got another rush dentist appointment so she could verify the mouth had healed and sign his dental form.

Maybe you can imagine the stress of trying to get all of this completed in one month’s time to meet the deadline. If I were you, I would get the dental exam and the panorex (and wisdom tooth removal, if necessary) taken care of now at your leisure.

Everyone on this forum says you have plenty of time to consider what to do and can accept USMA at the last second and be fine, no worries. But not so!

Don’t let anyone rush you. Don’t let anyone guilt you into holding a spot someone else wants.

Take your time please. Also be prepared for USMA to send you a thin white envelope with a reminder that your decision is due in the eeek or so before the deadline. Warn your parents! When the TWE arrived at our house I almost died waiting for my kid to get home from school to open the Mail. It was like the 28th of April…and my kid needed to make his decision/accept his appointment and this was the official reminder.
Think about majors and think about what you want to do with your life. You can never go wrong w West Point. (My Guy spent time looking at the webpages about his desired major—he had already accepted USAFA when his USMA appointment arrived…tough decision. He is now an Army officer…& USMA GRAD.)

Thank y’all for the input. Regardless of when I find out from Navy (whether tomorrow or on April 15th) I will not make any decisions and will not accept any appointment until I have received a definitive decision from Navy. If I should wait until after I have accepted an appointment to submit any forms, and maybe risk having to hurry, then so be it. It is worth waiting to hear before I make any final decision. Thank y’all for y’all’s help! I appreciate it!

Great choice Tex. You will manage. I hope your Navy dreams come true--and let's admit that I don't fully understand them--but America needs people who want to do that work. If anyone says anything snarky, please let me know. What will be interesting is, if in the future your turn your appointment down--there will be a happy candidate who receives an offer of appointment. (And that person will be able to get all of his or her required stuff done prior to R-Day--and the wisdom teeth thing...more of a guideline if there is there isn't time...you can get it done at USMA...)

The wisdom tooth removal is “more of a guideline” unless your wisdom teeth are impacted and your dentist won’t sign your dental form without them removed. Also WP looks at the panorex themselves to decide if your wisdom teeth are okay or not.
