Under Waiver Review

Hey yall. I was just wondering if there is still a number of applicants on their DODMETS status saying they are "under waiver review". Since it is already March and we got about 2 months left to hear from the academies, I just wanted to see if anyone was in the same boat. I was medically disqualified in January to let you all know.

I would assume so because many applicants have not even been sent for medical eval yet.

DD has been under waiver review for USNA since end of Dec. She was disqualified for both USAFA and USNA in early Dec. We submitted several rounds of AMI and USAFA denied her waiver. After we submitted rebuttal info she was granted a waiver last week!!! We are hoping to hear from USNA soon :) .

You’re not alone. My son was DQ’d on 10/22. There was no action at all until last week when AMI was finally requested on behalf of USMMA. We knew they were pursuing a waiver but the status had still been under review for many weeks.

There has not been any movement on behalf of USCGA or USNA but I believe that is because they haven’t started pursuing a waiver for him. It’s nerve-wracking for sure, especially as it’s now March, but all you can do is wait.

I think all parents and applicants also need to keep in mind that if a waiver has not yet been requested as of 3/1/21 (assuming no LOA, and especially if the application AND medical was fully complete early on) then it is possible the SA will not be requesting a waiver at all.

This would be very common if the applicant was deemed non-competitive in one or more areas.

Between you saying this and him saying this

You can see how it becomes confusing following these forums sometimes.

I’m not even sure what “medical evaluation” they are referencing or how it relates to someone that is DQd and awaiting a waiver request, maybe they can clarify. I believe the first to be a more accurate response given the information available. If you read through the many threads talking about waivers in the DoDMERB forum you will see this is consistent with much of the feedback in those threads.

I also can’t speak to what the 2nd quote refers to, but the situation described in my statement is pretty straightforward.

It is up to the SA to decide if they want to pursue a waiver or not. If you are not competitive as an applicant after being DQ’d, the SA won’t pursue a waiver at all.

Apologies for the confusion. I suppose my point is that there are candidates, like my DS, who just rcvd LOAs or still have applications under review and will be considered competitive in the very near future, and who will be sent for DoDMERB- that have not yet started the DoDMERB process (but will soon) and may be medically DQ'd and then enter a "under waiver review" status awaiting a determination on whether a waiver will be granted or denied. So, the question "if there are still a number of applicants on their DODMETS status saying they are "under waiver review"" will = yes in such cases until waiver determination is made. If still confused, then I would recommend going with what @TheRightStuff stated.

My DS received this email back from his USNA AC a couple of weeks ago as he was offered a spot at NAPS contingent upon his medical waiver being approved...this should provide a little understanding as to why they are more backed up than just the new applicant portal being an issue:

"Things are a little delayed this year with medical, as most of our medical staff is also involved with COVID-19 testing/mitigation/vaccination for the Naval Academy and Washington D.C. Someone will contact you from the medical office regarding your waiver, but it may still take some time. The best advice I can offer you is to just sit tight. I apologize, I know this isn't ideal, but this is a unique year."

My son had followed up with an admissions counselor person to check, and they told him he had already had his waiver approved, even though it wasn't reflected in anything (other than a checkmark for medical, which he already had before). I think like everyone else said, they are just swamped with life right now.

He has not heard anything from the USAFA though. Still shows under review there.

I have been "Under Waiver Review" since mid-December. Yesterday, my BGO notified me that my medical is now complete. On my USNA portal, I see a check mark next to "Medical Examination." However, my DoDmMERB still says "Under Waiver Review." Does this mean I have been granted a waiver?

I’m in the exact same boat!

I am under waiver review for chronic insomnia. I got an MFR from my PCM however he stated I used to have depression which was a side affect was sleeping. I did not disclose depression on my forms. Is this going to kick me out of the program or will I just need additional documents?

It should change on both .... When our daughter back in 2019 got her waiver, I thought it was odd that the DoDMERB portal showed the “Waiver Granted”, but the USNA portal just had some instructions on what to do if you need to report any new or recent medical incidents.

I think your statement has a lot of merit to it in a non-COVID year. However, I have been "Under Waiver Review" since August 31st. I have had no action by USNA on my portals. With that being said, I have been told that they are pursuing a waiver for me. I think that it could just be really slow this year.

I don't disagree. However, also keep in mind that I said "possible" and each applicant's case is different as to whether a waiver is even requested and if so, how long it may take to come to a decision.
