University of North Georgia -- Commissioning question

Hello,
My nephew is interested in attending one of the military colleges -- he is particularly interested in VMI, but we are also looking at UNG.
They only have Army ROTC there, but he wants to join the air force.
Would he be able to join the corps of cadets, participate but not contract in ROTC for a scholarship -- and then apply to OCS in the USAF?
In case you're interested in the background:
He has ADHD and takes medication. But a very smart kid.
I can't get a straight answer from VMI on whether ADHD (and specifically medication) is a disqualifier. I don't think it is -- because it is not necessarily commissioning, he could in theory participate in ROTC without contracting. But it's not 100% clear.
That's why we are looking at University of North Georgia, a great school, which does allow ADHD and kids taking medication, into both the university and corps of cadets. Same issue with commissioning -- but they are clear on the point.

Hi there! I see no reason why he wouldn't be able to do what you are proposing - the ROTC participation would be something of a resume booster, especially if he held leadership roles within the battalion; and on the academic side the classes would be counted as electives (unless they aren't, at UNG?).

On the VMI side of the house, I was actually curious that VMI couldn't/wouldn't give a straight answer - I spoke to the VMI Infirmary at 540-464-7218 and they confirmed that you can have ADHD/be taking medications for the same and be able to attend, it is just the commissioning bit that gets squirrelly.

Please let me know if these help, or if you have any other questions/concerns. I'm rooting for your son!

ADHD and meds would preclude him from obtaining an AFROTC Scholarship, but would not prevent him from attending VMI and participating in ROTC.

Commissioning after graduation might be an issue if still on the meds whether it be via OCS or a direct commission.

RVM!
