I just enrolled at University of Utah and I plan on becoming a college programmer there hopefully landing a scholarship during my first year. I talked to Marine Corps Officer incharge of the Unit when I toured the school and it was basically a very informal interview. Everything went great and he’s looking forward to having me. I’m wondering if anyone is a part of the unit, has been a part of it, or will end up going there that has any info about them. I know it’s a relativity small unit compared to others but I’m also wondering how the midshipman feel about the unit as a whole. Thank you.

Skoooo Utes! I’m actually a current member of unit and it prides me to see more joining. We are definitely a small unit, no doubt but that allows for some pretty great things in my opinion. We are small tight knit group which means everyone knows everyone, I can’t speak for other units but I believe it really what sets the U apart. With us being small you get more time and energy and effort from both active duty staff and battalion staff which is beyond amazing. I’ve heard horror stories of units were 4/c get the short end of everything and only get to develop leadership skills toward the end of their time. At the battalion, billets are rotated to those that are fit and with us being smaller, that usually means you can get your hands on some responsibility at some point in your tenure. Our building stands on it own which means it solely ours to use, we don’t share with AF or Army, honestly such a blessing. We got showers, gym, computer room and more than adequate study space, you could honestly live in there if your really wanted too. When you show up and if you choose to stay, just know you WILL have an impact on the operations of the unit. The unit takes improvement very seriously and will constantly be asking and assessing how we could improve operations, freshman definitely have a voice to be considered so use it. From my eyes, I have never seen drama in the unit, pretty nice to say especially when NROTC can be competitive. PTs are great and will push everyone to their max, doesn’t matter how fit you are. We have a couple of MECEPs and OCs (enlisted guys and gals working toward a commission) which is very nice because you can pick their brains and get that enlisted point of view, which by the way is vital to being a good officer. Come in fit, make sure your able to preform at altitude if you’re not from Utah. Also make sure you’re ready to learn, there’s gonna be a lot of information you’ll be expected to understand and know at some point.

Lastly, make sure your in contact with who ever you talked to about the unit and the scholarship. If you’re not hearing anything about the start of the school year REACH OUT. If you have information about the start of the school year just sit tight and prepare for the school year. Be advised that you might not get complete info till later in the summer but just make sure you are on the staffs radar.
