If my son completes his pvt pilot license prior to an acceptance letter, should he call admissions to update his application?

If he thinks that having a private pilot certificate will improve his chances, sure.
He could send an EMail to his admissions counselor and ask how to go about updating this information, if it's even possible at this date (after the close of the application window).
My guess is that it's not possible to update an application with anything other than DoDMERB status (initiated by DoDMERB), now.
But that's just a guess!

They do ask about this on the candidate activities record which leads me to believe you get a slight bump from it. I agree with THParent, email your admissions counselor and ask if you can have it added at this point. No harm can be done in trying.

I believe it’s too late to submit anything (other than DoDMERB related items) since the deadline was January 31st. Was that piece of information already included on the application as being in progress? If so, a follow up email or phonecall may be appropriate. Otherwise, I’d be cautious about disturbing the process at this stage. I’m sure most all candidates are continuing to achieve past 1/31.
Best of luck.

DS received this in his 3Q letter a couple of days ago from his RC. It's not too late to update items on the file.

"You have demonstrated strong initiative and diligence in completing your file. Although qualified, you are still competing for admission and should continue to update your record with significant achievements in academic, leadership, and extracurricular and athletic activities. Do not forget to include standardized test scores or updated transcripts from your most recently completed academic semester. We will continue to add achievements to your file through the end of February 2018."

USNA is different than USMA. One, USNA doesn’t send or notify candidates if they are 3Q. Two, the deadline is January 31 for updates at USNA. Three, USNA will ask if they want your 7th semester grades. You can email your Admissions Counselor and ask though. Just remember that each SA has its own nuances for the application and deadline process.

Oops, thought I was commenting on a USMA thread. Good catch.

I don't think that it can hurt to send an email telling Admissions that he recently earned his private pilots license. It may give a small boost to the Application. For what its worth, I view the pilots license as a demonstration of maturity, goal setting and achievement rather than some special skill. The Navy doesn't really care if someone can fly an airplane going into USNA ---in fact, some flight instructors view it as an obstacle because you may may have to unlearn bad habits and learn the Navy way. I earned my pilot's license in High School, and do believe it helped me a little in my early NFO training, as I was already acclimated and comfortable in the air, and could concentrate on navigation and other tasks rather than the wow factor of flying.
